ALTARS – Ascetic Reflection (CD 2022)

O ALTARS não lançava material algum desde 2013, quando saiu seu primeiro álbum de estúdio, o ótimo “Paramnesia”. O trio australiano de Death Metal acaba de disponibilizar o seu segundo trabalho de estúdio, de nome “Ascetic Reflection”, em parceria com o selo italiano “Everlasting Spew Records”.

 O metal extremo australiano é de elite, indiscutivelmente. E essa formação do ALTARS conta com três caras super relevantes desse cenário, que credenciam a banda como uma das mais interessantes e únicas da Oceania: O Batera “Alan Cadman” (TZUN TZU e STARGAZER), o guitarrista “Lewis Fischer” (membro atual do estupendo IGNIVOMOUS) e o baixista e vocal “Brendan Sloan” (CONVULSING).

 Não espere por Death Metal tradicional. O som dos australianos é tecnicamente complexo, multifacetado, de muita atenção à construção das atmosferas e significativamente dissonante, algo que faz todo sentido considerando o histórico dos membros.

 Só que o som do ALTARS tem um às na manga, quando comparado a boa parte das bandas de Death ou Black Metal dissonante: A duração das músicas joga a seu favor. No trabalho atual, são 40 minutos inteligentemente distribuídos entre 8 faixas.

 Apresentação da banda em ordem, vamos ao disco: “Slouching Towards Gomorrah” é uma introdução atmosférica, cria um clima de suspense e não entrega muito até seu finalzinho, quando os vocais rasgados fazem a ponte com “Perverse Entity”, abrindo com um riff imenso, ritmo insano e a bateria sensacional do veterano “Cadman”. A quebradeira rítmica e as guitarras discordantes e brilhantes imperam.

 É de insanidade que gostamos. E é isso que “Luminous Jar” entrega, oscilando entre alta velocidade e momentos contemplativos, ambos contidos em uma mesma dimensão doentia, e concebidos em camadas sobrepostas e hermeticamente interligadas.

 “Black Light Upon Us” tem introdução perturbadora, que soa como se mil sinos badalassem simultaneamente dentro da cabeça do ouvinte. Seus primeiros três minutos posam ameaçadores, como um mantra Doom que se repete, se renova e promete uma explosão iminente. Esta se desenha, toma forma progressiva e estranhamente, ameaça, mas não ocorre.

 Tal final anticlimático não evita que a excepcional faixa título “Ascetic Reflection” surja como um monstro horrendo e desengonçado, em muito devido aos ritmos quebrados e às guitarras esquizofrênicas. Retoma o lado mais doentio do trabalho, com muita variação, improvisos brilhantes e total imprevisibilidade.

 Segue a loucura com “Anhedonia”, outra faixa que oferece muito em termos de variações e que conta com algumas das acelerações mais legais da obra, estruturadas sobre caóticos riffs atonais. O ápice da insanidade fica por conta da desaceleração final. Ouça e constate.

 Gostei demais dos riffs iniciais de “Opening the Passage”, com as guitarras duelando brevemente. O clima dissonante que se segue é delirante, com destaque para as linhas cáusticas de baixo. O som flui bem demais, apesar da complexidade. Trabalho conjunto notável, sob liderança do já mencionado batera. Leads de guitarra matadores a encerram.

 A derradeira “Inauspicious Prayer” abre enigmática, lentamente posicionando-se como se fora de fato um mantra, ou uma oração de natureza obscura. Moderadamente, sobe o tom e ganha guitarras enervantes, encerrando o álbum sinistramente.

 De fato, “Ascetic Reflection” é um excelente álbum de retorno do ALTARS. Death Metal perturbador, incomum, composto e executado com primazia. O tipo de disco que pega o ouvinte desprevenido, o trucida em pleno ar em meio a um tornado de brutalidade e técnica, e o cospe de volta ao solo em pedaços.

 Merece a mais alta recomendação aos fãs metal extremo bem elaborado, e especialmente àqueles que curtam GORGUTS (CAN), PORTAL (AUS), IMPETUOUS RITUAL (AUS), AD NAUSEAM (ITA), ULCERATE (NZL), CONVULSING (AUS), ABYSSAL (GBR).

ALTARS haven’t been very productive as of late. There’s no material since 2013, when their solid first studio album “Paramnesia” came out. Fixing that, the Australian Death Metal trio have just released their second studio work, named “Ascetic Reflection”, in partnership with Italian label “Everlasting Spew Records”.

 Australian extreme metal is undeniably elite. And this ALTARS lineup has three relevant guys in such scenario, who automatically label the band as one of the most interesting and unique in Oceania: Drummer “Alan Cadman” (TZUN TZU and STARGAZER), guitarist “Lewis Fischer” (IGNIVOMOUS) and bassist and vocalist “Brendan Sloan” (CONVULSING).

 Don’t expect traditional Death Metal. The Aussies’ sound is technically complex, multifaceted, paying close attention to atmosphere and significantly dissonant, something that makes perfect sense considering the members’ backgrounds.

 But the sound of ALTARS has an ace up its sleeve, when compared to most dissonant Death or Black Metal bands: The length of their songs works in their favor. In the new album, a total of 40 minutes is cleverly distributed among 8 tracks.

 Band’s presentation in good order, let’s talk about the record: “Slouching Towards Gomorrah” is an atmospheric intro, creating suspense and not a whole lot more until its very end, when growling vocals make the bridge for “Perverse Entity“, opening with a gargantuan riff, insane rhythm and the sensational drumming by veteran “Cadman”. The rhythmic breaks and the discordant, brilliant guitars prevail.

 We do enjoy insanity. And that’s exactly what “Luminous Jar” delivers, oscillating between high speed and contemplative moments, both contained in the same sick, perverse dimension, and conceived in overlapping and hermetically interconnected layers.

 “Black Light Upon Us” has a disturbing intro, which sounds as if a thousand bells tolled simultaneously inside your head. Its first three minutes pose ominous, like a Doom mantra that repeats and renews itself, promising an impending blast. Said blast takes shape, progressively, but strangely, it does not happen after all, despite all threats.

 Such an anticlimactic ending does not prevent the exceptional title track “Ascetic Reflection” from emerging as a hideous and gangly monster, largely due to the broken rhythms and schizophrenic guitars. It takes up the sicker side of the work, with a lot of variation, brilliant improvisations, and total unpredictability.

 Madness follows with “Anhedonia”, another track that offers a lot in terms of variations and that packs some of the record’s wildest accelerations, structured on chaotic atonal riffs. They reach the apex of insanity with the closing downturn.

 I really like the opening riffs of “Opening the Passage”, with guitars briefly dueling. The dissonant mood that follows is delirious, highlighted by the caustic bass lines. Everything flows just great, despite all complexity. A remarkable joint venture, under the leadership of the otherworldly drummer. Killer guitar leads end it, and all you know is you want to play it again.

 The final piece “Inauspicious Prayer” opens enigmatically, slowly positioning itself as if it were indeed a mantra, or a prayer of an obscure nature. It raises the tone moderately, and gains unnerving guitars, grimly closing the album.

 In fact, “Ascetic Reflection” is an excellent ALTARS comeback album. Disturbing, unusual, composed and recorded with primacy. The kind of record that catches the listener off guard, butchers him mid-air in a tornado of brutality and refined technique, only to spit him back to the ground in bits and pieces. Hey ALTARS, it’s great to have you back.

 Highly recommended for fans of top-tier, well-crafted extreme metal, especially those who enjoy stuff like GORGUTS (CAN), PORTAL (AUS), IMPETUOUS RITUAL (AUS), AD NAUSEAM (ITA), ULCERATE (NZL), CONVULSING (AUS), ABYSSAL (GBR).
