Desde a entrada do público, até o show.

THE GATHERING is a band that was part of my youth back in the 1990s. I remember the first time I heard about them through a letter I received from a contact in the Netherlands who played in a death/thrash band whose name I can no longer recall. He told me he had been listening a lot to a new band called “The Gathering” and that they were really good. It would still take quite some time before I finally got my hands on the band’s first official album, the incredible “Always”.
I was genuinely impressed by the heaviness, the band’s quality and their doom metal approach, which was enriched by a wide range of other elements. The band would go on to release “Almost a Dance” in 1993 before finally reaching a much wider international audience with the magical “Mandylion”. That album introduced the young Anneke van Giersbergen, whose voice would mesmerize even the most radical headbanger around the world.
Her outstanding vocal performance, combined with the release of several music videos that helped the band gain greater international exposure, gradually won over fans everywhere. Anneke remained with the band until 2007. I admit I hadn’t followed the band closely for many years, but when it was announced that THE GATHERING would be playing in Brazil, performing “Mandylion” in its entirety, I simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be part of such a historic night. Not only because of the album itself, but also because the band would have the incredible Anneke back on vocals.
My trip turned into quite an adventure… hahaha! After months of waiting for the big day, I woke up very early only to receive a notification on my phone saying that my flight had been cancelled and my ticket rescheduled for the evening, which would certainly make me miss the show. Shower taken, clothes on and backpack over my shoulders, I headed to the airport with my soul ready for battle! Hahahahaha!
Fortunately, the airline staff were helpful and managed to get me on a flight shortly after noon. Once I arrived in São Paulo, I checked into the hotel and enjoyed some well-deserved rest. Around 7 p.m., I headed to Audio Music, a truly excellent venue, where a small line had already formed. I didn’t waste any time outside and quickly made my way inside to secure a good spot. Fortunately, the premium standing area wasn’t completely packed, allowing me to enjoy the show comfortably and without too much trouble.
Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with a heel spur and plantar fasciitis, so activities like standing through an entire concert can feel like a torture session for me.
But when THE GATHERING took the stage, all of that faded away, and I found myself witnessing one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever had the chance to attend. I had never seen Anneke perform live before, and it was a truly transcendent experience. My impression throughout the entire event, and especially afterward, was that this woman has only gotten better with time. Her incredible vocal control, stage presence and interaction with the audience were simply outstanding.
Although the entire band is rather reserved in terms of stage presence, Anneke’s charisma, beauty and undeniable talent completely won over a packed Audio venue. She put smiles on everyone’s faces and even got a whole bunch of grown men and hardcore headbangers singing along! Hahahahahaha! It was also great to run into familiar faces and good friends from the Brazilian extreme metal scene, all there enjoying a concert like this.

I’m not going to go through every song individually, otherwise this review would never end. But hearing classics such as “Eleanor”, “Fear the Sea”, “In Motion #1”, “Leaves” (everyone who lived through that era remembers the official video for this song… those were the days!), “Strange Machines” and “Saturnine” performed with such incredible sound quality was something truly special.
It was a night to remember forever. Every second became part of a musical experience filled with nostalgia and a deep connection to the art presented by this Dutch band.
It’s also worth highlighting how smoothly the entire event was organized. From the audience entrance to the concert itself, everything ran perfectly. The sound and lighting were impeccable, and everyone left more than satisfied. You could see from Anneke’s reactions just how excited and enthusiastic the audience was to be there. Everyone was singing, jumping around and having a great time at an event put together with absolute care and attention to detail.
