Enquanto ouvia esse novo álbum da banda finlandesa VARGRAV me lembrei que recentemente um amigo das redes sociais havia perguntado se eu tinha alguma indicação de uma banda de symphonic black metal para indicar. Nenhuma me veio à cabeça naquele momento… Hoje indicaria o VARGRAV sem sombra de dúvidas.
Ainda que o metal extremo, incluso aí o black metal, tenha se reinventado das mais diversas formas, a sonoridade tradicional nunca irá perder sua majestade e é exatamente nisso que essa banda se destaca.
O VARGRAV foi formado em 2015 e “Dimension: Daemonium” é o seu quarto álbum de estúdio oficial além de um EP lançado em 2023. A banda realmente me surpreendeu devido à qualidade da sua música. A rispidez, a atmosfera envolvente, o uso belíssimo dos teclados e os vocais que não vão longe demais do que esperamos para uma banda desse estilo.
O álbum abre com a longa Intro “Thy Daemonion” e segue com “Ablaze Upon The Nocturnal Realms” que já se impõe com rispidez e velocidade. O riff principal é cortante e cheio de feeling.
O grupo reúne inúmeras influências, mas poderia destacar que percebi em sua música o sangue que corre nas veias de grupos como Limbonic Art, Emperor (primeiro álbum), Enslaved (Vikinglr… e Eld). A música tem um grande poder. O antigo Dimmu Borgir também pode ser percebido na música da banda. Ouça “Moonsfrost Storms” e você compreenderá o que é a música do VARGRAV e como ela se impõe ao ouvinte.
Os riffs são gélidos, mas ainda assim possuem uma mágica melodia. A frieza dos vocais contrasta com a atmosfera etérea que é criada pelas linhas de teclados. A bateria vai massacrando em sua jornada pelo álbum inteiro, seja em momentos mais cadenciados, seja nas partes mais rápidas.
“Dragons of Nightmare” é uma das melhores músicas. É épica, cadenciada e ainda agressiva nos momentos que isso é necessário. Fria como a noite. A faixa “The Gates of My Dimension” é outro destaque. Grande composição.
Outra composição que aposta na brutalidade é “Bleeding Galaxies”, que vai mais intensamente construindo sua identidade em níveis de puro ódio e escuridão, assim como a bela e intensa “Starlight Chalice”. Os teclados aqui criam uma atmosfera poderosa e épica.
A música que fecha o álbum é “Unveil the Enslavement of Lunar Prophecies”, que usa de todas as características apresentadas nas músicas anteriores e fecha em grande estilo um álbum que me fez voltar no tempo, quando o mundo era tomado pela escuridão e crueza musical. Há algumas vibrações do velho Dissection nas guitarras e isso é muito foda. Uma grata surpresa e uma que espero ter muito em breve na coleção.
Se você aprecia o verdadeiro black metal sinfônico o VARGRAV certamente é um nome a ser apreciado.

While listening to this new album by the Finnish band Vargrav, I was reminded that recently a friend on social media had asked me if I had any recommendations for a symphonic black metal band. None came to mind at the time… Today, I would recommend Vargrav without a shadow of a doubt.
Even though extreme metal—black metal included—has reinvented itself in countless ways, its traditional sound will never lose its majesty, and that is exactly where this band stands out.
Vargrav was formed in 2015, and “Dimension: Daemonium” is their fourth official studio album, in addition to an EP released in 2023. The band truly surprised me with the quality of their music. The rawness, the immersive atmosphere, the beautiful use of keyboards, and the vocals that don’t stray too far from what we expect for a band of this style.
The album opens with the long intro “Thy Daemonion” and continues with “Ablaze Upon The Nocturnal Realms”, which already asserts itself with rawness and speed. The main riff is sharp and full of feeling.
The group brings together numerous influences, and I could highlight that I noticed in their music the blood that runs through bands like Limbonic Art, Emperor (especially their first album), and Enslaved (from Vikingligr Veldi and Eld). Music has great power. The old Dimmu Borgir can also be felt in the band’s sound. Listen to “Moonsfrost Storms” and you will understand what Vargrav’s music is and how it imposes itself on the listener.
The riffs are icy, yet they still carry a magical melody. The coldness of the vocals contrasts with the ethereal atmosphere created by the keyboard lines. The drums relentlessly drive through the entire album, whether in slower, more measured moments or in faster sections.
“Dragons of Nightmare” is one of the best tracks. It is epic, paced, and still aggressive when needed—cold as the night. The track “The Gates of My Dimension” is another highlight. A great composition.
Another composition that leans into brutality is “Bleeding Galaxies”, which increasingly builds its identity on levels of pure hatred and darkness, just like the beautiful and intense “Starlight Chalice.” The keyboards here create a powerful and epic atmosphere.
The closing track is “Unveil the Enslavement of Lunar Prophecies”, which uses all the characteristics presented in the previous songs and ends the album in grand style. It took me back to a time when the world was dominated by darkness and musical rawness. There are even some old Dissection vibes in the guitars, which is very cool. A pleasant surprise—and one I hope to have in my collection very soon.
If you appreciate true symphonic black metal, Vargrav is certainly a name worth exploring.
