12 álbuns de estúdio e uma carreira de 38 anos de estrada não é definitivamente o currículo de qualquer banda, mas adicionar a isso uma discografia em que nenhum álbum, digo NENHUM álbum é ruim, isso é para apenas um punhado de bandas.
Ainda que você possa apontar um ou outro álbum que soa mais burocrático, ninguém nunca irá acusar o IMMOLATION de ter lançado algo totalmente irrelevante. Ao chegar ao seu décimo segundo álbum de estúdio era de se esperar que esses caras tirassem o pé do acelerador e ficassem mais calmos em suas críticas… É aí que você se engana totalmente.
“Descent” é um dos álbuns mais poderosos da carreira da banda norte-americana e com certeza é o seu melhor trabalho em mais de uma década. Se você consegue entender como esses caras conseguem ficar mais brutos, mais complexos e ainda mais raivosos, mesmo depois de tanto tempo, você é um grande fã como eu.
O álbum começa com a devastadora “These Vengeful Winds”, que é uma pedrada. A música engana em seu início com uma pequena intro acústica, mas logo mostra a verdadeira face, vomitando um peso absoluto em meio a uma bateria que busca esmagar crânios ao seu redor e arranjos de guitarra que só esses caras conseguem criar com essa qualidade. O velho e bom “groove” death metálico que o IMMOLATION cria não poderia deixar de estar presente. As partes mais lentas criam a atmosfera sufocante e densa necessária para que a escuridão se imponha.
Na sequência “The Ephemeral Curse” já começa brutal. Os vocais de Ross estão em sua mais pútrida forma, soando como o próprio caos. Algo que está muito poderoso nesse novo álbum são as partes onde o groove aparece. São riffs e melodias que soam melancólicas e raivosas, moldando momentos de grande impacto.
Isso pode ser conferido ao ouvir faixas como “God´s Last Breath”, uma composição que impacta o ouvinte desde a sua primeira nota. Lenta e pesada, a música soa como um ritual onde seu riff principal é sufocante e direto. A próxima retoma o caminho da devastação. “Adversary” não deixa pedra sobre pedra. O trabalho de guitarras é impecável (como é em todo o álbum).
“Attrition” tem um riff gélido e obscuro e ao ser acompanhado pela voz abissal de Ross Dolan. A junção dessa atmosfera com momentos mais brutais cria uma experiência surreal. O IMMOLATION não é o que é a toa.
O álbum inteiro molda momentos mais pesados e cheios de feeling . Faixas como “Bend Towards the Dark”, “Host” (essa tem um trabalho de bateria incrível) e a faixa título “Descent”.
“False Ascent” é aquela faixa que seus vizinhos odiaram que você ouvisse o dia todo. Tudo aqui cheira a enxofre e é uma bela composição para ser ouvida em máximo volume no domingo de “Páscoa”…. profanar o zumbi ressuscitado é sempre necessário.
Algo que me chamou a atenção nesse novo trabalho foi que a banda incorporou um nível gélido de melodias que não eram tão comuns antes. Não se trata de um som “melódico”, mas da construção de camadas que ao se unirem criam uma sonoridade única. Aliás, há década que o IMMOLATION não apresenta nada que possa ser chamado de convencional.
A arte da capa é bonita e é muito bom ver o logotipo tradicional sendo utilizado. “Descent” é um álbum matador e coloca o IMMOLATION sentado sozinho em seu trono de destaque no death metal mundial… Não vejo a hora de receber o CD e o LP dessa pequena obra-prima…

12 studio albums and a 38-year career on the road is definitely not just any band’s résumé—but add to that a discography in which not a single album, I mean NOT A SINGLE album, is bad, and that’s something only a handful of bands can claim.
Even if you can point to one or two albums that sound more by-the-numbers, no one would ever accuse Immolation of releasing something completely irrelevant. By the time they reached their twelfth studio album, you might expect these guys to ease off the gas and tone down their criticism… and that’s where you’d be completely wrong.
“Descent” is one of the most powerful albums in the band’s career and certainly their best work in over a decade. If you can understand how these guys manage to get heavier, more complex, and even angrier after all this time, then you’re a true fan like me.
The album kicks off with the devastating “These Vengeful Winds”, which hits like a sledgehammer. The track deceives at first with a brief acoustic intro, but quickly reveals its true face, spewing absolute heaviness alongside drumming that feels like it’s crushing skulls and guitar arrangements that only these guys can craft with such quality. The classic death metal groove that Immolation creates is, of course, present. The slower sections build the suffocating, dense atmosphere needed for the darkness to take over.
Next, “The Ephemeral Curse” already starts out brutal. Ross’s vocals are in their most putrid form, sounding like pure chaos. One thing that stands out on this new album is how powerful the groove sections are—riffs and melodies that feel both melancholic and furious, shaping moments of great impact.
You can hear this clearly on tracks like “God’s Last Breath”, a composition that hits the listener from the very first note. Slow and heavy, it feels like a ritual, with a suffocating and direct main riff. The following track resumes the path of devastation. “Adversary” leaves no stone unturned, with impeccable guitar work (as it is throughout the entire album).
“Attrition” features a cold, obscure riff, paired with Ross Dolan’s abyssal voice. The blend of this atmosphere with more brutal moments creates a surreal experience. Immolation isn’t what it is by chance.
The entire album shapes moments that are heavier and full of feeling. Tracks like “Bend Towards the Dark”, “Host” (which features incredible drumming), and the title track “Descent” stand out.
“False Ascent” is that track your neighbors would hate you for playing all day. Everything here reeks of sulfur, making it a perfect composition to blast at maximum volume on Easter Sunday… profaning the resurrected zombie is always necessary.
One thing that caught my attention in this new work is that the band incorporated a colder level of melodies that wasn’t as common before. This isn’t about being “melodic,” but about building layers that, when combined, create a unique sound. In fact, it’s been decades since Immolation released anything that could be called conventional.
The cover art is beautiful, and it’s great to see the traditional logo being used. “Descent” is a killer album that places Immolation alone on its throne at the top of the global death metal scene… I can’t wait to get my hands on the CD and LP of this small masterpiece.
