Você junta Steve Tucker, Gene Palubicki e John John Longstreth, coloca esses caras em um quarto fechado e só abre a porta depois que um álbum estiver composto. Com certeza o ódio, o background e a brutalidade dessa experiência só poderiam gerar um debut álbum como “The Conquering Darkness”. Eu só posso saudar a Old Shadows Records por trazer essa hecatombe musical para o público brasileiro.
Não é de hoje que considero Gene Palubicki como um dos grandes guitarristas do death metal contemporâneo e o que ele fez aqui comprova mais uma vez essa opinião. Se você puder imaginar uma mistura do Angel Corpse e do Morbid Angel, então a música do MALEFIC THRONE fará total sentido para você.
A banda já tinha mostrado que seria um nome de relevância quando lançou um autointitulado EP, em 2022. Já nesse álbum de estreia aquela sonoridade sofre injeções de esteroides e de brutalidade e o resultado é essa pancadaria musical. Não há momentos de fraqueza nesse trabalho. Ouça a faixa de abertura “Blasphémait Desecration” e “The Voice of My Ghost” e isso será percebido. Os riffs viscerais comandam o espetáculo, o baixista e vocalista Steve Tucker impõe sua presença brutal com uma performance pútrida e extremamente pesada. O baterista John John Longstreth é um monstro imparável, com linhas de bateria extremamente brutais e cheias de camadas e detalhes que só uma audição mais cuidadosa consegue perceber.
“Athirst for Dissonance” e “Born of Plague” são apocalípticas, principalmente a segunda, que em termos de brutalidade é capaz de devastar seus tímpanos sem o mínimo esforço. É incrível a quantidade de riffs desgraçados Gene Palubicki consegue criar. “Divine Tragedy” traz alguns elementos diferentes na guitarra em alguns momentos, mas que se casam perfeitamente com a cortante energia musical desencadeada aqui. Uma das minhas faixas favoritas é “Carnage of the Forgotten”. A mistura da selvageria visceral do Angel Corpse com a complexidade do Morbid Angel soa como uma sinfornia mortal nessa composição. Nada fica em pé após a execução dessa música.
A catástrofe continua com “When Our Shadows Align” (essa com riffs insanos e uma linha de bateria descomunal) e “Forged of Stone”, que tem um início matador. O riff de abertura dessa música é épico e ao vivo deve causar um caos no público.
Um destaque tem que ir para a arte da capa desse trabalho. Fugindo do já saturado vermelho e preto, a banda escolheu usar tons de preto e branco, criando uma arte obscura e que contrastou perfeitamente com o logotipo amarelo e vermelho. Um álbum não indicado para ouvidos sensíveis.

You take Steve Tucker, Gene Palubicki, and John Longstreth, lock them in a room, and only open the door once an album has been written. The hatred, background, and sheer brutality of such an experiment could only result in a debut album like “The Conquering Darkness”. I can only salute Old Shadows Records for bringing this musical hecatomb to the Brazilian audience.
It is not new for me to consider Gene Palubicki one of the great guitarists of contemporary death metal, and what he does here once again proves that point. If you can imagine a mixture of Angelcorpse and Morbid Angel, then the music of Malefic Throne will make perfect sense to you.
The band had already shown they would become a relevant name when they released their self-titled EP in 2022. On this debut album, that sound receives injections of steroids and brutality, and the result is this relentless musical assault. There are no weak moments here. Just listen to the opening track “Blasphémait Desecration” and “The Voice of My Ghost” and it becomes immediately clear. The visceral riffs command the spectacle, while bassist and vocalist Steve Tucker imposes his brutal presence with a putrid and extremely heavy performance. Drummer John Longstreth is an unstoppable monster, delivering drum lines that are brutally intense and layered with details that only a more careful listen will reveal.
“Athirst for Dissonance” and “Born of Plague” are apocalyptic tracks—especially the latter, which in terms of brutality is capable of devastating your eardrums with minimal effort. It is incredible how many vicious riffs Gene Palubicki can create. “Divine Tragedy” brings some different guitar elements at certain moments, yet they perfectly match the cutting musical energy unleashed here.
One of my favorite tracks is “Carnage of the Forgotten”. The mixture of the visceral savagery of Angelcorpse with the complexity of Morbid Angel sounds like a deadly symphony in this composition. Nothing remains standing after this song is executed.
The catastrophe continues with “When Our Shadows Align”—featuring insane riffs and an immense drum performance—and “Forged of Stone”, which opens with a killer introduction. The opening riff of this song is epic and must cause absolute chaos in the crowd when played live.
A highlight must also go to the album’s cover artwork. Moving away from the already saturated red-and-black palette, the band chose black and white tones, creating a dark visual that contrasts perfectly with the yellow and red logo. This is not an album recommended for sensitive ears.
