Recebi essa promo e me interessei pelo histórico dos caras, não havia ouvido nada deles até então. VIDRES A LA SANG é uma banda da Catalunha, na Espanha, com vinte anos de existência e quatro discos anteriores, sendo o último de 2018.

 Seu quinto e novo álbum é “Fragments De L’Esdevenir”, que será lançado pelo selo “Abstract Emotions” no início de julho. Um trabalho rico em emoção, fruto de um longo período de reflexão e composição ao longo da pandemia. Liricamente, isso se revela na visão de uma sociedade doente (em todos os sentidos) e decadente. Adicionalmente, presta homenagem à contundente poesia de “Miquel Martí i Pol” (1929 – 2003 – autor catalão internacionalmente reconhecido).

 Musicalmente, a banda é um desafio às categorizações tradicionais. Eu diria que, ao menos nesta obra, a fundação é Metal Extremo Progressivo, temperado com momentos Black Metal Atmosférico, elementos de Death e Doom e até segmentos amenos mais típicos do Rock Progressivo.

 “Mort de Paraula” é o single já disponível para streaming em plataformas como o “YouTube”. Uma base de guitarras potentes, porém não extremas, progride lentamente até uma pausa no instrumental, a qual introduz o vocal sobrenatural de “Eloi Boucherie” (composição, vocais e guitarra rítmica), recitando em catalão. Daí em diante, forma-se de fato a espinha dorsal do som, destacando o baixo dominante. Explica-se: quem gravou o baixo foi ninguém menos que o hermano uruguaio “Martín Méndez” (OPETH). Faixa muito interessante, complexa sem soar pretensiosa.

 “Salveu-me els Ulls” inicia criando atmosfera serena, mas os primeiros momentos de agressividade intensa se impõem bruscamente, a partir da percussão veloz, guitarras mais sujas e pesadas, e o vocal rasgado. Show do batera “Jordi Farré” e da dupla de guitarristas. Os leads e solos de “Albert Martí” são belíssimos. Som mais direto e pesado do álbum, com lampejos brilhantes.

 A terceira “Ventres de Llum” divide o disco como um interlúdio, levemente mais longo que de costume. As vocalizações angustiantes e torturadas se expressam recitando pesarosamente, em meio a acordes de guitarra lentos e desconexos, e efeitos sonoros.

 “Fins Aquí” é progressiva por natureza, e abre com pegada menos sorumbática, de bateria e baixo vibrantes. As guitarras fazem ótima base para os vocais, enquanto o instrumental consolida um ritmo tenso, que promete explodir a qualquer momento. Mais uma vez, as guitarras contribuem com solos melódicos de extremo bom gosto. Na reta final, pitadas geniais e esquizofrênicas, que me lembraram algo na linha do TOOL (EUA).

 A quinta e última faixa é “Ara és Demà”, que começa com cara semelhante à antecessora. Instrumental muito rico e harmonioso, atmosfera melancólica. Os vocais são menos desesperadores e mais sombrios. Aqui há os segmentos progressivos mais característicos, técnicos e prolongados. Guitarras de muito feeling e som extremamente agradável.  

 Excelente lançamento do VIDRES A LA SANG, banda foda. Gostei muito de ouvir a língua catalã num projeto extremo. Pela natureza da obra, é recomendável que o leitor ouça com calma. Há bastante a ser absorvido, e o tempo investido traz a devida recompensa.

 Curte o seu metal extremo com mente aberta? Banda e disco pra você. Mas principalmente voltado a fãs de OPETH (SUE), a fase atual do ENSLAVED (NOR), AMORPHIS (FIN), IHSAHN (NOR), SOEN (SUE), PORCUPINE TREE (GBR), TIAMAT (SUE), AKERCOCKE (GBR).

I received this promo and quickly got hooked by the guys’ background, a band which I hadn’t heard before. VIDRES A LA SANG is a band from Catalonia, Spain, with twenty years of existence and four previous full albums, the last one released in 2018.

 Their fifth and new album is “Fragments De L’Esdevenir”, which will be released under Spanish “Abstract Emotions” Label in early July. A work rich in emotions, product of a long period of reflection and composition throughout the pandemic. Lyrically, this reveals itself in the vision of a sick (in every possible way) and decaying society. Additionally, it pays tribute to the striking poetry of “Miquel Martí i Pol” (1929 – 2003 – internationally recognized and celebrated Catalan author).

 Musically, the band poses a challenge to traditional categorizations. I’d say that, at least in this work, the foundation is Extreme Progressive Metal, seasoned with Atmospheric Black Metal moments, Death and Doom elements and even milder segments, more typical of Progressive Rock.

 “Mort de Paraula” is the single already available for streaming on platforms such as “YouTube”. A base of powerful, but not extreme guitars, slowly progresses to a sudden break in the instrumental, which introduces the supernatural vocals of “Eloi Boucherie” (composition, vocals and rhythm guitar), gloomily reciting in Catalan. From then on, the actual backbone of the sound is formed, highlighting the dominant bass. Easily explained: who recorded the bass was none other than the skilled Uruguayan “Martín Méndez” (OPETH). Very interesting track, complex yet not sounding pretentious.

 “Salveu-me els Ulls” starts by creating a serene atmosphere, abruptly shattered by the first moments of intense aggression, led by the fast percussion, dirtier and heavier guitars, and the piercing vocals. Great performances of drummer “Jordi Farré” and the guitar duo. The leads and solos by “Albert Martí” are truly beautiful. The album’s most straightforward and heavy track, with flashes of brilliance.

 The third piece “Ventres de Llum” splits the record as an interlude, slightly longer than usual. The harrowing, tortured vocalizations express themselves mournfully reciting, amidst slow, rambling guitar chords and eerie sound effects.

 “Fins Aquí” is progressive by nature, and opens with a less gloomy feeling, with vibrant drums and bass. The guitars create a great base for the vocals, while the instrumental consolidates a tense rhythm, one that seems ready to burst at any moment. Once again, the guitars contribute with tasteful melodic solos. In the final stretch, moments of genius and schizophrenia that reminded me of something along the lines of TOOL.

 The fifth and final track is “Ara és Demà”, which starts in a similar pace to its predecessor. Very rich and harmonious in instrumentals, showing a melancholic atmosphere. The vocals sound less desperate, however darker. The song showcases more characteristic, technical, and extense progressive segments. Guitars are played with a lot of feeling, delivering a most pleasant sound.

 An excellent release by VIDRES A LA SANG, in fact a great band. I really enjoyed listening to the Catalan language on extreme music. Due to the album’s nature, it is recommended that the reader takes his time listening to it. There is a lot to be taken in, and the time invested gets properly rewarded.

 In case you enjoy your extreme metal with an open mind, this one presents itself as treat for you. And certainly, a high recommendation for fans of OPETH (SWE), the current proggy ENSLAVED (NOR) albums, AMORPHIS (FIN), IHSAHN (NOR), SOEN (SWE), PORCUPINE TREE (GBR), TIAMAT (SWE), AKERCOCKE (GBR).
