WITCHING ALTAR – Morningstar (EP 2023)

A dupla “lisérgica e demoníaca do Doom Metal brasileiro” voltou depois de oito anos adormecida em algum cemitério do submundo e fazendo o que sabem de melhor, Doom Metal!  Quem conhece esse Duo já sabe que os caras vão por aquele caminho do clássico Doom Metal e adicionando pitadas lisérgicas e viajantes, com uma pegada setentista. E para nós amantes das sinfonias lúgubres é tudo que nós queremos!  Peter Vitus e T. Witchlover voltaram com um trabalho matador e com alguns convidados lançaram esse EP “Morningstar” cuja única crítica é ser curto e ter apenas 3 faixas e um cover. Não viaja, Walter! Um EP é isso mesmo, uma pequena amostra do que pode vir no futuro e se o próximo Full Length ter o poder dessa pequena mostra virá uma obra-prima!

Como já comentamos, vitus (G) & Witchlover (V/G) convidaram os amigos e músicos Beto Gambaroni (D), Luan Lima (K) e Zé Misanthrope (Omfalos) para participar de algumas faixas desse trabalho. E acredito que fizeram uma viagem musical e rolou muita marijuana e entregaram um trabalho muito bom! O problema é lembrar quem gravou qual instrumento em qual música e aí eu preciso de uma erva, ou melhor, não, daí que minha cabeça não vai funcionar mesmo. (Hahaha) 

O play abre com uma pequena faixa instrumental chamada “Raising Of The Cross” e já emenda com a faixa que nomeia esse trabalho. O salmo começa com “Morningstar” inicia com uma base de guitarra e a música vai crescendo com belos vocais e o baixo segurando os graves e dando peso para a bateria seguir numa pegada simples e retona. No final, um solo de guitarra simples, mas que gruda na cabeça. É um tema lento, mas sem ser muito lento e digamos que tem um clima Heavy Metal na linha Black Sabbath e Pentagram. Muito fooodaaa!

No altar da luxúria, o padre satânico inicia o terceiro salmo intitulado “The Oath Of Misery” que tem logo no início uma base de guitarra bem pesada e arrastada. A música vai crescendo em clima mid – tempo e o riff obviamente bem pesado e a velocidade aumenta ocasionalmente no decorrer dela. Só para os “doomers” ter um norte tem um pouco de Black Sabbath, fase setentista e Saint Vitus, porém, com uma identidade própria. Até porque esse duo fúnebre já tem muita estrada percorrida com seus outros projetos no submundo, já visitaram muitos cemitérios, ou seja: os caras não são amadores e sabem fazer músicas com qualidade e sabem também diferenciar influências e fazer seu próprio caminho. Fechando a missa lúgubre, o último salmo é recitado hora de pagar tributo aos finlandeses do Spiritus Mortis, para a faixa “Death Walking”, música que se encontra no disco que leva o próprio nome da banda, lançado em 2004. E essa cover tem o DNA do WITCHING ALTAR, mas sem perder as raízes originais eternizadas pelos finlandeses. 

Esse EP foi gravado, mixado e masterizado em vários estúdios pelas cidades de Recife, João Pessoa, Brasília e São Paulo, por Peter Vitus, e ficou muito bom. Uma ótima gravação!  Layout por Paulo Jeca Schulz. Aliás, parabéns para a banda e o selo Excarnation Records por entregar um trabalho muito bonito. 

Um digipack em três painéis com letras, fotos e todas as informações. Aliás, a capa é belíssima chamada “Elevação da Cruz em Porto Seguro” (1879) do artista luso/brasileiro Pedro Peres e mostra toda a ignorância religiosa em catequizar os indígenas na época do descobrimento do Brasil.

“Morningstar” é uma bela obra do heavy doom metal nacional! E estamos ansiosos para o segundo Full Length desses maníacos do submundo brasileiro, já que “Ride with the Devil” foi lançado no longínquo ano de 2015.  Doom metal is still dead – we are just obstinate ghosts

The “lysergic and demonic Brazilian Doom Metal” duo returned after eight years dormant in some underworld cemetery and doing what they do best, Doom Metal! Anyone who knows this Duo already knows that the guys follow the path of classic Doom Metal and add lysergic and traveling touches, with a 1970s feel. And for us lovers of lugubrious symphonies, that’s all we want!

Peter Vitus and T. Witchlover returned with a killer work and with some guests they released this EP “Morningstar” whose only criticism is that it is short and has only 3 tracks and a cover. Don’t be delirious, Walter! An EP is just that, a small sample of what could come in the future and if the next Full Length has the power of this small sample, it will be a masterpiece!

As we already mentioned, vitus (G) & Witchlover (V/G) invited friends and musicians Beto Gambaroni (D), Luan Lima (K) and Zé Misanthrope (Omfalos) to participate in some tracks from this work. And I believe they went on a musical trip and there was a lot of marijuana and they delivered very good work! The problem is remembering who recorded which instrument in which song and then I need some weed, or rather, no, so my head won’t work anyway. (Hahaha)

The play opens with a small instrumental track called “Raising Of The Cross” and then ends with the track that names this work. The psalm begins with “Morningstar” begins with a guitar base and the song grows with beautiful vocals and the bass holding the bass and giving weight for the drums to follow in a simple rhythm and return. At the end, a simple guitar solo, but one that sticks in your head. It’s a slow song, but without being too slow and let’s say it has a Heavy Metal vibe in the vein of Black Sabbath and Pentagram. Very good!

At the altar of lust, the satanic priest begins the third psalm entitled “The Oath Of Misery” which has a very heavy and dragging guitar base at the beginning. The song grows in a mid-tempo mood and the riff is obviously very heavy and the speed increases occasionally throughout it. Just for the “doomers” to have a north, there’s a bit of Black Sabbath, the 1970s phase and Saint Vitus, however, with its own identity. Especially because this funeral duo has already covered a lot of ground with their other projects in the underworld, they have already visited many cemeteries, in other words: the guys are not amateurs and they know how to make quality music and they also know how to differentiate influences and make their own path.

Closing the mournful mass, the last psalm is recited, time to pay tribute to the Finns of Spiritus Mortis, for the track “Death Walking”, a song found on the album that bears the band’s own name, released in 2004. And this cover has the DNA of Witching Altar, but without losing the original roots immortalized by the Finns.

This EP was recorded, mixed and mastered in several studios in the cities of Recife, João Pessoa, Brasília and São Paulo, by Peter Vitus, and it turned out very good. A great recording!
