VOIMATON – Profane Vestige (CD 2022)

Ao ler o nome VOIMATON e colocar a promo pra rolar, imaginei na hora tratar-se de uma formação da Finlândia. Até por ser uma palavra finlandesa, que pode ser traduzida como “Impotente”.

 O som da banda, inicialmente, me levou a crer o mesmo, um Death Doom de natureza sufocante, doentio e esmagador. Na verdade, o trio é de Chicago, nos Estados Unidos, e “Profane Vestige” é seu primeiro disco de estúdio, após uma demo e dois EPs, um deles contendo uma apresentação ao vivo.

 A arte de capa de “Noah Cutter Meihoff” estampa habilmente a miríade de aberrações que povoa a obra dos caras. Delírios criativos grotescos com uma pegada meio medieval. Encaixa legal com a sonoridade do VOIMATON.

 Musicalmente, o trio desenvolve seu Death Doom com brutalidade e muito groove, oscilando eficientemente entre seções mais lentas, ultra pesadas, ritmos médios e acelerações vertiginosas. O peso obsceno, esmagador do baixo e os riffs imensos se sobressaem em meio ao instrumental.

 É possível notar que as referências e fontes principais de inspiração são bandas dos Estados Unidos e Finlândia, mas a personalidade forte dos integrantes se impõe ao longo do álbum, dando origem a toques e características próprias, algo legal demais de se constatar em uma estreia.

 “Scalding Tendrils” se arrasta brevemente, engrena gradativamente e atinge o ápice da impetuosidade configurando ótima abertura. As seções aceleradas inspiram uma roda magnífica, com cotovelos voadores, narizes sangrando, empurrões e gordos imensos e suados, distribuindo abraços aleatórios ao final da música (eu seria um deles, se não prezasse pelo distanciamento social).

 O passo médio de “Malebolge” cativa de imediato. Aqui o ouvinte começa a perceber que o batera “Pat O’Hara” (NUCLEUS, ex-NARCOTIC) é um monstro, que puta performance. “Bile” é mais enérgica, com ótimas alternâncias e variações rítmicas.

 Algumas das músicas são composições antigas, que saíram no material anterior, e que ganharam potência extra nas versões do álbum. Caso da destruidora “Despondent Mass”, onde se destacam os vocais cavernosos e o baixo mega potente de “Dave Tibbetts” (ex-NARCOTIC).

 A faixa título conta com algumas das passagens arrastadas mais grotescas e insanas, com sólido trampo de guitarras de “Henry Fordney” (ex-SEWER RAT) e linhas de baixo bem fora da caixa. Outra faixa com toques bem diferentes, e definitivamente troglodita, é a “Phosphorescent Graves”.

 O mais puro Death Doom poderia ser definido com a reprodução da asfixiante “Succumb”. Lenta, de atmosfera sepulcral e instinto assassino. As duas peças finais são excelentes amostras do período da formação da banda: “Erudition” e “Enshrine Antipathy”, a primeira de estrutura menos complexa e super direta. A segunda, recheada com riffs ganchudos e segmentos velozes e intensos.

 Excelente estreia do VOIMATON, atualmente não é tarefa simples se destacar em meio a um mar vermelho repleto de tubarões, como é o deste subgênero. A banda tem êxito, e dá seus primeiros passos no underground do metal extremo oferecendo personalidade, paixão e material de alto nível.

 Recomendável aos fãs da fase inicial do HOODED MENACE (FIN), da fase madura e mais Doom do grande RUNEMAGICK (SUE), HEAVYDEATH (SUE), WINTER (EUA), CIANIDE (EUA), CONVULSE dos primórdios (FIN) e DESECRESY (FIN).

When I read the name VOIMATON and started playing it, I imagined right away it would be a formation from Finland. First, because that is a Finnish word, which can be translated as “Powerless”.

 Then the band’s sound initially led me to believe the same, a Death Doom Metal of suffocating, sickening and oppressive nature. But in fact, the trio hails from Chicago, Illinois, and “Profane Vestige” is their first full-length album, after a demo and two EPs, one of them consisting of a live performance.

 The cover art by “Noah Cutter Meihoff” deftly portrays the myriad of abominations which populate the band’s work. Grotesque creative delusions, somewhat medieval in a creepy way. It really fits in nicely with VOIMATON’s sound.

 Musically, the trio develop their Death Doom with brutality and plenty of groove, oscillating efficiently between slower, ultra-heavy sections, midtempo and dizzying accelerations. The obscene, crushing heaviness of the bass and the immense riffs stand out amidst the instrumental.

 It is possible to realize that their main references and sources of inspiration are bands from the United States and Finland, but the bandmembers fierce personality imposes itself throughout the album, opening room for their own touches and traits, something great to witness in a debut.

 “Scalding Tendrils” trudges briefly, gradually engages and reaches the apex of ferocity, delivering a great opening piece. The fast-paced sections inspire a magnificent circle pit, with flying elbows, bloody noses, shoving around and huge, sweaty fat-ass dudes, handing out random hugs at the end of the song (I’d be one of them, if I didn’t cherish social distancing).

 The mid paced “Malebolge” immediately captivates. Here the listener begins to realize that drummer “Pat O’Hara” (NUCLEUS, ex-NARCOTIC) is a monster, terrific performance indeed. “Bile” sounds more energetic, with great alternatives and rhythmic variations.

 Some of the songs are old stuff that came out on previous material, and which gained extra power in the album versions. Case of the cataclysmic “Despondent Mass”, where “Dave Tibbetts’” cavernous vocals and mega powerful bass stand out (ex-NARCOTIC).

 The title track features some of the most grotesque and insane sluggish passages, with solid guitar work by “Henry Fordney” (ex-SEWER RAT) and creative, out of the box bass lines. Another troglodyte track with very fine, exquisite touches, is “Phosphorescent Graves”.

 Death Doom in its purest state could be defined by playing the suffocating “Succumb”. Slow, bred with sepulchral atmosphere and murderous instinct. The final two pieces are excellent samples of the band’s formation period: “Erudition” and “Enshrine Antipathy”, the first with a less complex and straightforward structure. The second, filled with catchy riffs and rabid, intense segments.

 “Profane Vestige” is an excellent debut by VOIMATON. It is certainly not an easy task standing out in the carnage of a shark-ridden red sea, as is the case of such subgenre these days. The band is successful and takes its first major steps in extreme metal’s underground offering passion, personality, and high-quality material.

 Recommended for fans of early HOODED MENACE (FIN), the mature and Doom oriented era of great RUNEMAGICK (SWE), HEAVYDEATH (SWE), WINTER (US), CIANIDE (US), early CONVULSE (FIN) and DESECRESY (FIN).
