Após quatro anos de espera, os veteranos do death metal sueco TOXAEMIA finalmente lançam um novo álbum. “Rejected Souls of Kerberus” dá continuidade ao trabalho que a banda apresentou no álbum “Where Paths Divide”, de 2020, que foi o álbum de estreia da banda, que mesmo tendo sido formada em 1989, havia lançado apenas demo tapes e um ep intitulado “Beyond the Realm”, em 1991.

O novo trabalho do grupo mostra que o TOXAEMIA não diminuiu sua intensidade e seu metal da morte foi entregue com maestria. A banda continua sua saga entregando um death metal tradicional, focando muito no peso, em partes não tão brutais, mas que ainda assim tem o seu impacto no ouvinte.

Quando falamos em peso não dá para ignorar a faixa de abertura “Rejected Souls of Kerberus” que possui uma sequência matadora de bons riffs, arranjos e tudo guiado por uma atmosfera cheia de feeling. Em alguns momentos a banda investe em um groove para quebrar o ritmo, mas tudo segue seu objetivo. “M.A.O.D” continua nessa mesma intensidade e com bons riffs. Aquele andamento de bateria mais cadenciado eleva ainda mais esse trabalho das guitarras. Os solos executados aqui também somam ao resultado final.

Uma das melhores músicas do álbum é “Hunger”, um death metal absolutamente cheio de energia e que me fez lembrar o trabalho dos holandeses do Asphyx. Música rápida, direta e que é perfeita para que o caos seja implantado em qualquer ambiente em que ela seja tocada. Essa mesma intensidade pode ser ouvida em “Blood Red”.

Se você que mais feeling e peso “Beyond the Realm” é o que procura, enquanto há mais melodia em “Ex-Odio” e em “Dawn of the Enslaved”.

Outra grande faixa é “Tragedies Through Centuries”, uma música realmente pesada e mais suja. O seu riff principal é o motor que move essa composição e cria o ambiente perfeito para uma vocalização imunda. É a ponte perfeita para preparar o ouvinte para a última faixa do álbum “I Saw them Die”, o primeiro cover que a banda registra em sua carreira e que traz peso, melodia, groove e brutalidade em doses certas. A escolha da faixa dos conterrâneos do Dismember foi acertada e encerra um álbum muito bom em um nível muito alto.

A produção do álbum é excelente (nenhuma surpresa já que o responsável pela mixagem e masterização é nada menos do que Dan Swanö) e gostaria de destacar a belíssima arte da capa, que é assinada por William Persson Öberg e que me lembrou o estilo do mestre Dan Seagrave. Uma grande capa sempre é um cartão de visitas importante para criar expectativa em torno de um álbum.

After four years of waiting, Swedish death metal veterans TOXAEMIA are finally releasing a new album. “Rejected Souls of Kerberus” continues the work that the band presented on 2020’s ‘Where Paths Divide’, which was the band’s debut album, even though it was formed in 1989 and had only released demo tapes and an ep entitled ‘Beyond the Realm’ in 1991.

The group’s new work shows that TOXAEMIA has not diminished its intensity and its death metal has been delivered with mastery. The band continues its saga by delivering traditional death metal, focusing a lot on heaviness, with parts that aren’t as brutal, but which still have an impact on the listener.

When we talk about heaviness, we can’t ignore the opening track “Rejected Souls of Kerberus”, which has a killer sequence of good riffs, arrangements and everything guided by an atmosphere full of feeling. At times the band invests in a groove to break up the rhythm, but everything follows its purpose. “M.A.O.D” continues with the same intensity and good riffs. The more cadenced drumming elevates the guitar work even more. The solos performed here also add to the final result.

One of the best songs on the album is “Hunger”, a death metal song full of energy that reminded me of the work of the Dutch band Asphyx. It’s fast, direct music that is perfect for creating chaos in any environment in which it is played. That same intensity can be heard in “Blood Red”.

If you want more feeling and heaviness, “Beyond the Realm” is what you’re looking for, while there’s more melody in “Ex-Odio” and “Dawn of the Enslaved”.

Another great track is “Tragedies Through Centuries”, a really heavy and dirty song. Its main riff is the engine that drives this composition and creates the perfect atmosphere for a filthy vocal. It’s the perfect bridge to prepare the listener for the last track on the album, “I Saw them Die”, the first cover the band has recorded in their career and which brings weight, melody, groove and brutality in just the right doses. The choice of the track by Dismember was the right one and closes a very good album on a very high level.

The album’s production is excellent (no surprise since the person responsible for mixing and mastering is none other than Dan Swanö) and I’d like to highlight the beautiful cover art, which is signed by William Persson Öberg and reminded me of the style of the master Dan Seagrave. A great cover is always an important calling card for creating anticipation around an album.
