Os romanos do THULSA DOOM surgiram no cenário Death Metal europeu em 2017, e no ano seguinte lançaram seu primeiro registro, o EP “Realms of Hatred”. Apesar de bastante curto, o material deixou clara a qualidade e o nível absurdo de agressividade do trio.
Quatro anos mais tarde, chegou a hora do aguardado álbum de estúdio, lançado no dia 30/09 via “Invictus Productions” sob o título “A Fate Worse Than Death”. O selo irlandês produziu e está comercializando versões digitais, CDs e Discos de vinil.
A magnífica ilustração da capa tem a assinatura do mestre Belga “Kris Verwimp”, e impressiona pelo jogo de luz e sombras, potência e contraste das tonalidades de azul. Só posso imaginar o quão incrível essa capa vai ficar num belo LP.
Apresentando a sonoridade do trio, trata-se de Death Metal Old School de grosso calibre. Zero firulas, brucutu, um som orgânico de riffs monolíticos e desprovido de beleza, porém viciante e de rápida assimilação.
Suas principais referências já eram claras na época da Demo (EP), e o álbum de estreia apenas reafirma o DNA do THULSA DOOM – a admiração e desejo dos italianos de restabelecer, em pleno 2022, a era de ouro de bandas estadunidenses como MORBID ANGEL, SADISTIC INTENT e as sul-americanas PENTAGRAM (Chile) e MORTEM (Peru).
Logo de cara, a abertura com “Where Death Dwells” domina o ambiente com ritmos médios e acelerados, fundamentados pela bateria destruidora, vocais imponentes e guitarras super afiadas, que disparam solos esquizofrênicos e totalmente diabólicos.
Tornam-se ainda mais agressivos em “Cursed Domains Beyond”, composição brutal com potencial para vir a ser um hino Thrash/Death moderno. A banda também brilha nos momentos mais cadenciados e em faixas mais trabalhadas, como a seguinte “Into the Vaults of Angmar”, que evolui gradativamente rumo à vertigem e ao caos.
Outro destaque individual é “Tomb of the Serpent Cult”, onde a percussão veloz e bárbara atropela o ouvinte sem dó, com apoio de riffs e solos devastadores. A música que nomeia o álbum é uma instrumental bem tranquila, abrindo espaço até a teclados discretos.
A serenidade é estilhaçada de pronto por “Order of the Black”, uma das mais ignorantes do Play. “Hung, Drawn and Quartered” tem pegada marcial, e conquista principalmente pela rifferama certeira. Já em “Lost Portal of Xhul, mais atmosférica e extensa, a banda explora segmentos carregados da aura Doom.
Em sua reta final, a banda retoma seu lado mais agressivo com a apocalíptica “The Dawn of the Fire Age”. Finalizando a obra, a instrumental “The Orgy” encerra a carnificina com seus gemidos profanos.
Excelente disco de estreia do THULSA DOOM, os italianos comprovam sua qualidade, firmam seu posicionamento no submundo extremo e transformam, com êxito, a expectativa gerada pela Demo em realidade.

The Romans of THULSA DOOM emerged on the European Death Metal scene in 2017, but their first official release only came out the next year, the “Realms of Hatred” EP. Despite being quite short, the mini album made clear the trio’s quality and absurd levels of aggression.
Four years later, it was time for the long-awaited studio album, released on September 30th via “Invictus Productions” and entitled “A Fate Worse Than Death”. The Irish label has produced and is marketing digital versions, CDs, and vinyl records.
The magnificent cover illustration has the signature of Belgian Legend “Kris Verwimp”, and blows away with masterful light and shadows play, the power and contrast of blue tones. I can only imagine how amazing this cover will look on a beautiful vinyl LP.
Introducing the trio’s sound, it’s sheer Old School Death Metal. Zero gimmicks, brutish, organic sound based upon monolithic riffs and devoid of beauty, yet addictive and highly enjoyable.
Its main references were already clear by the time of the Demo (EP), and the debut album only reaffirms THULSA DOOM’s DNA – the reverence and desire of the Italians to reestablish, in the middle of 2022, the golden age of US icons like MORBID ANGEL and SADISTIC INTENT, as well as South American Champions PENTAGRAM (Chile) and MORTEM (Peru).
Right away, opening piece “Where Death Dwells” dominates with medium and fast rhythms, supported by destructive drums, imposing vocals and ultra sharp guitars, which launch schizophrenic, totally diabolical solos and leads.
They get even more aggressive on “Cursed Domains Beyond”, a brutal composition with the potential to become a modern Thrash/Death anthem. The band also shines in slower segments and in technically challenging tracks, such as “Into the Vaults of Angmar”, which gradually evolves towards bewildering chaos.
Another individual highlight is “Tomb of the Serpent Cult”, where the fast and barbaric percussion mercilessly tramples the listener, backed by devastating riffs and solos. The title track is a pretty smooth instrumental, even making room for wise, tactful keyboards.
Serenity is immediately shattered by “Order of the Black”, one of the most nefarious, ruthless pieces in the album. “Hung, Drawn and Quartered” has a martial footprint, and conquers mainly with the monstrous riffs. On the other hand, “Lost Portal of Xhul” sounds more atmospheric and extensive, where they explore Doom-laden, extremely heavy sections.
In its final stretch, the band resumes its more aggressive side with apocalyptic “The Dawn of the Fire Age”. Finishing the album, instrumental outro “The Orgy” puts an end to the carnage with its suggestive, unholy moaning.
An excellent debut album by THULSA DOOM, the Italians testify their quality, establish their position in European extreme underworld and successfully convert the expectations generated by the Demo into reality.
