Atuando desde 2016, o coletivo RITUAL DEATH passou relativamente despercebido até agora, tendo produzido EPs, Splits e uma compilação em 2020, reunindo todas as faixas da banda gravadas até então.
O quarteto norueguês sediado em Trondheim é uma associação de membros atuais ou passados de atos bem conhecidos do Black Metal, como MARE, CELESTIAL BLOODSHED, FIDES INVERSA, BEHEXEN, BEYOND MAN e ONE TAIL, ONE HEAD, entre outras.
A banda produz um som desolador e desconfortável, porém consegue cativar aqueles que celebram os sentimentos mais lúgubres. Trata-se de Black Metal com infusões de Death e Doom, além de elementos de Occult Rock. Após seis anos de experiência, os caras prepararam seu primeiro álbum completo de estúdio, o homônimo “Ritual Death”.
O trabalho está sendo lançado digital e fisicamente nesse início de dezembro pela gravadoras “Shadow Records” e “Helter Skelter Productions” da Suécia, ambas marcas da notória “Regain Records”, nome bem conhecido entre os fãs de metal extremo.
Vamos ao que realmente importa, as músicas: “Ancient Devil Worship” é uma faixa que oferece ótima ideia do que a banda tem a oferecer. Black Metal de estrutura simples, um som cru, curto e diretão que ganha algum refinamento a partir dos teclados, sombrios e gélidos.
“Vermin” é um pouco mais encorpada, principalmente em função dos riffs. A bateria quase unidimensional compromete o resultado, infelizmente. O segmento final melhora muito, com pegada Doom matadora.
As coisas ficam bem interessantes com “Lunae”, que tem um riff principal afiado e certeiro, e, mais uma vez, uma pegada Doom (reforçada pelos teclados tétricos) bem sacada. Já em “Black Metal Terror” temos intro com uma voz sinistra recitando um texto, seguida por uma das instrumentações mais extremas do álbum, curta mas espetacular.
O Black Metal peçonhento, cru e extremamente colérico segue com a excelente “Morbid Veils of Kharon”, dona dos leads mais insanos do álbum. “Salomes Dance” abre como uma trilha de filme de terror, seguida por ótimo trabalho de percussão. Talvez seja a faixa com a pegada mais ritualística, com trampos notáveis do vocal “Wraath” e do tecladista “H. Tvedt”, construindo, juntos, uma ambientação doentia.
“Darkness of Death” mantém elevados os níveis de demência, em ritmo predominantemente médio e algo hipnótico. Em “The Pale King” a banda impõe um ritmo mais contundente, e convence pela imposição e repetição de frases, e uma batida enervante.
Pra encerrar, “Nothingness Without Emptiness Within” tem ótimos segmentos cadenciados e uma vibe ultra pesada, novamente destacando a criatividade do tecladista.
A capa, de ilustração um tanto simples (e até tosca) é recheada de simbolismo, com o crânio, duas foices e o sangue pingando em um cálice com o número 13 em algarismos romanos, envoltos por um círculo. A crueza e o cinza da capa dão a impressão (verídica) de algo direto e objetivo, exatamente o que o disco entrega ao ouvinte.
Ótimo álbum de estreia do RITUAL DEATH. Recomendável principalmente aos fãs de bandas como ONE TAIL, ONE HEAD (NOR), MARE (NOR), CULTES DES GHOULES (POL), NEGATIVE PLANE (EUA), MORTUARY DRAPE (ITA), MALOKARPATAN (SVK), NECROMANTIA (GRE).

Founded in 2016, the RITUAL DEATH collective has passed relatively unnoticed until now, having produced a few EPs, Splits, and a compilation in 2020, which offered all the band’s recorded tracks at that point.
The Trondheim-based Norwegian quartet is an association of current or past members of well-known European Black Metal acts such as MARE, CELESTIAL BLOODSHED, FIDES INVERSA, BEHEXEN, BEYOND MAN and ONE TAIL, ONE HEAD, among others.
The band produces a grim and uncomfortable sound, but certainly manages to captivate those who celebrate the bleakest feelings. It’s bleak Black Metal with Death and Doom Metal infusions, as well as Occult Rock elements. After six years of experience, they have prepared their first full studio album, the eponymous “Ritual Death”.
The full-length album is being released digitally and physically in early December by “Shadow Records” and “Helter Skelter Productions” from Sweden, both brands held by the notorious “Regain Records”, a well-known label among extreme metal fans worldwide.
Now, off to what really matters: The tracks: “Ancient Devil Worship” is a song which presents a good general idea of what the band has to offer. Black Metal with a simple structure, a raw, short, and straightforward sound that gains some refinement from the icy keyboards.
“Vermin” is somewhat more full-bodied, mainly due to its riffs. The almost one-dimensional drumming impairs the result, unfortunately. The final segment is decisively an improvement, with a killer Doom atmosphere.
Things get really interesting with “Lunae”, which packs a sharp, magnetic main riff, and, once again, a great Doom vibe (reinforced by the gloomy keyboards). In “Black Metal Terror” a deep, sinister voice recites a text, followed by one of the most extreme instrumentations of the album, quite short but spectacular.
The venomous, raw, and extremely spiteful Black Metal follows with the excellent “Morbid Veils of Kharon”, owner of the most insane leads on the album. “Salomes Dance” opens like a horror movie score, followed by a great percussion work. It is perhaps the most ritualistic track, with notable performances by both vocalist “Wraath” and keyboardist “H. Tvedt”, building, in conspiracy, a sickening and unsettling ambience.
“Darkness of Death” keeps the high levels of dementia, at a predominantly medium and somewhat hypnotic pace. In “The Pale King” the band imposes a more forceful rhythm, and convinces by imposition and repetition of phrases, as well as an unnerving beat.
Finally, “Nothingness Without Emptiness Within” has great slower segments, and an ultra-heavy vibe, again highlighted by the keyboardist’s creativity.
The cover, with a rather simple (and even crude) illustration, is filled with symbolism, with a skull, two crossed scythes and a drop of blood falling into a chalice marked with number 13 in Roman numerals, everything surrounded by a circle. The rawness and grayness of the cover art give the (true) impression of something frank and objective, exactly what the album delivers to the listener.
A great debut album by RITUAL DEATH. Recommended for any Black Metal fans, and especially for those into ONE TAIL, ONE HEAD (NOR), MARE (NOR), CULTES DES GHOULES (POL), NEGATIVE PLANE (USA), MORTUARY DRAPE (ITA), MALOKARPATAN (SVK), NECROMANTIA (GRE).
