QRIXKUOR – Zoetrope (Adv. EP 2022)

 O QRIXKUOR é uma das entidades mais perturbadoras, caóticas e enigmáticas do Death Metal britânico. Ano passado, lançou seu primeiro álbum de estúdio, o brutal “Poison Palinopsia”. Por sinal, um dos melhores registros de metal extremo de 2021 (ficou em primeiro lugar na minha lista pessoal).

 Ressurgindo ainda mais extremo e avant-garde, a banda liderada pelo talentoso e desafiador “S” (ADORIOR) está lançando um EP de nome “Zoetrope”, fruto de esforços conjuntos dos selos gringos “Invictus Productions” (Europa) e “Dark Descent Records” (América do Norte).

 Apresentando a sonoridade do QRIXKUOR, trata-se de uma variação punitiva, claustrofóbica e enervante de Death Metal. Tradicionalmente, as músicas são extensas e complexas, irradiando insanidade. Não é música para almas sensíveis. Há Agressividade latente, Atmosfera asfixiante e Dissonância onipresente, formando o que eu considero a tríade maldita que compõe a arte dessa magnífica entidade.

 A arte de capa é bastante intrigante, e certamente aberta a interpretações. Trabalho creditado ao renomado artista argentino “Santiago Caruso”.

 Musicalmente, o mini álbum oferece uma única faixa de vinte e quatro minutos, dividindo título com o EP. Além da habitual dissonância (que amplia significativamente as sensações de peso e agressividade), o QRIXKUOR acrescentou sutis arranjos sinfônicos à música. O resultado é excelente, já que as orquestrações colaboram para uma ambientação ainda mais sinistra e delirante.

 O nome “Zoetrope” (ou zootrópio em português) refere-se a um artefato inventado no século XIX que servia para criar a ilusão de movimento de figuras e desenhos por meio de um cilindro ou tambor. Somando esta informação à ilustração da capa, é provável que seja uma alegoria para as ilusões cíclicas e tormentos que permeiam a mente humana. Início e conclusão da música fundem-se indivisivelmente, intensificando a noção de ciclo / infinito.

 Essa viagem filosófica é acompanhada por uma instrumentação brutal, altamente criativa e imprevisível. O sentimento de impotência diante da discordância quase cacofônica é inevitável, algo que os trabalhos da banda entregam e impõem com maestria.

 São mais vinte e quatro minutos majestosos acrescidos à curta e significativa discografia do QRIXKUOR. Um EP imponente, de natureza ambiciosa e desafiadora, uma experiência visceral, vertiginosa e rica em alternativas. Item que deve ser ouvido e desfrutado com tempo, e sem interrupções para plena absorção.

QRIXKUOR is one of the most disturbing, chaotic and enigmatic entities in British Death Metal. Last year, they released their first studio album, the brutal and brilliant “Poison Palinopsia”. By the way, one of the best extreme metal records of 2021 (it made first place on my personal list).

  Resurfacing even more extreme and avant-garde, the band led by talented provocateur “S” (ADORIOR) is now releasing a mini album titled “Zoetrope”, the result of joint efforts by international labels “Invictus Productions” (Europe) and “Dark Descent Records” (North America).

  For those unfamiliar, QRIXKUOR’s sound is a punishing, claustrophobic and unsettling take on Death Metal. Traditionally, songs are lengthy and complex, propagating insanity. It’s definitely not music for sensitive souls. There is Latent Aggression, Asphyxiating Atmosphere, and Omnipresent Dissonance, shaping what I consider to be the accursed triad which makes up the art of such magnificent entity.

  The cover art is quite intriguing, and certainly open to interpretation. The piece is credited to the renowned Argentine artist “Santiago Caruso”.

  Musically, the EP offers a single twenty-four-minute track, sharing its title with the mini album. In addition to the usual dissonance (which significantly amplifies the sensations of sheer heaviness and aggressiveness), QRIXKUOR added subtle symphonic arrangements to its music. The result is great, as the orchestrations collaborate for an even more sinister and delirious atmosphere.

The title “Zoetrope” refers to an artifact invented in the 19th century, which served to create the illusion of movement on figures and drawings by means of a cylinder, or drum. Adding this piece of information to the cover illustration, it is likely an allegory for the cyclical illusions and torments that permeate the human mind. Beginning and end of the song merge indivisibly, intensifying the notion of a cycle, and infinity.

  This philosophical journey is accompanied by brutal, highly creative, and unpredictable instrumentation. The feeling of impotence in the face of nearly cacophonous discordance is inevitable, something that the band’s works masterfully deliver, and impose.

  The release adds twenty-four majestic minutes to QRIXKUOR’s short, yet significant discography. An imposing EP, ambitious and challenging in nature, a visceral and vertiginous experience, rich in alternatives. An item that ought to be played and enjoyed as a whole, with time, and without any interruptions for full absorption.

  Highly recommended for fans of non-traditional Death Metal albums, with a dense and chaotic atmosphere. Bands like TEITANBLOOD (SPA), IRKALLIAN ORACLE (SWE), GRAVE UPHEAVAL (AUS), ABYSSAL (GBR), PORTAL (AUS), VASSAFOR (NZL), DEATHSPELL OMEGA (FRA) and ANTEDILUVIAN (CAN) could be seen as references.
