PESTICIDE – Death Compendium (CD 2023)

O PESTICIDE é um dos nomes que sempre esteve circulando no meio do underground brasileiro por causa de sua história. Tendo sido formado no longínquo 1990, a banda teve algumas partidas e retornos em sua trajetória (inclusive com uma mudança de nome durante o período de 1993-1994, quando se chamou Cauterization), tendo voltado à ativa em 2019 e finalmente lançando seu debut álbum intitulado “Death Compendium” agora em 2023.

“Death Compendium” é um álbum que traz lá das brumas do passado aquele death grind mais tradicional, que unia de forma muito eficiente um peso monstruoso e uma velocidade massacrante. E é exatamente isso que você encontra nas 11 faixas que fazem parte desse trabalho de estreia.

Quando ouvimos a banda algumas influências se tornam evidentes e elas servem para moldar uma sonoridade realmente muito foda. Cannibal Corpse (em seu primeiro e melhor álbum), Impetigo, Napalm Death, Blood, Demolition Hammer (preste atenção ao trabalho das guitarras em várias músicas) e até mesmo Deicide. E falando das guitarras, tiro o chapéu para a produção desse álbum, já que a gravação das guitarras é realmente incrível, assim como a sonoridade do baixo. Um exemplo disso é facilmente percebido na faixa “Napalm”, que tem excelentes linhas de guitarra, um baixo bastante presente e é uma grande música.

A faixa de abertura “Gutted and Burned Alive” é um outro exemplo do qual bom é o trabalho de guitarra desse álbum. É uma música em que a veia do Cannibal Corpse aparece com força. Para quem aprecia o death thrash verdadeiro, a segunda música “Jurisprudence of Carnage” é uma das melhores faixas do álbum. É pesada, tem riffs matadores e uma brutalidade que se impõe. A vocalização dessa faixa é suja, propositalmente não tão imunda, e traz à mente o velho grindcore.

“Drowning Hypoxemia” tem linhas de guitarra que vão te colocar para bater cabeça sem sombra de dúvida. De alguma forma tem uma pegada meio Krisiun atual (onde a velocidade não impera o tempo todo). Outra que coloco na lista das melhores é a nervosa “Academid Degree of Putefraction”.

A música “Generalized Hypoxia” é suja e me lembrou algo do primeiro álbum do Pestilence. O riff mais imundo e com um clima mais denso. “Suppurated Turgescent Necrosis” é uma versão atualizada da época em que a banda se chamava Cauterization e apresenta um death metal que soava mais como o antigo “death core”. Uma faixa muito boa para a época em que foi composta.

O álbum finaliza com a esmagora “Hypovolemic Shock”, que tem momentos mais cadenciados, mas ainda assim é uma música intensa.

A banda resolveu resgatar suas origens e adicionar como bônus alguns materiais do seu passado, sendo eles a Demo ensaio 1994, da época do Cauterization e a Demo Ensaio 1993. Ambos os materiais são extremamente undergrounds e por isso mesmo soam como devem soar: sujos, caóticos e totalmente underground. A banda era crua, mas as excelentes ideias estavam presentes nessas composições. A audição do álbum comprova isso, mostrando uma banda atualmente precisa, brutal e pesada. E com uma qualidade de criação diferenciada para a cena nacional.

A arte da capa não pode deixar de ser citada e é uma belíssima e pútrida criação que se conecta perfeitamente com a música do PESTICIDE. “Death Compendium” é um álbum que deve estar na coleção dos death bangers brasileiros e estrangeiros. Isso é puro metal da morte dos subterrâneos.

PESTICIDE is one of the names that has always circulated in the Brazilian underground because of its history. Having been formed in the distant 1990s, the band has had a few departures and returns along the way (including a name change during the 1993-1994 period, when it was called Cauterization), having returned to activity in 2019 and finally releasing its debut album entitled “Death Compendium” now in 2023.

“Death Compendium” is an album that brings back from the mists of the past that more traditional death grind, which very efficiently combined monstrous heaviness and massacring speed. And that’s exactly what you’ll find on the 11 tracks that make up this debut album.

When you listen to the band, some influences become evident and they serve to mould a really great sound. Cannibal Corpse (on their first and best album), Impetigo, Napalm Death, Blood, Demolition Hammer (pay attention to the guitar work on several songs) and even Deicide. And speaking of the guitars, I take my hat off to the production of this album, as the recording of the guitars is truly incredible, as is the sound of the bass. An example of this is easily realised in the track “Napalm”, which has excellent guitar lines, a very present bass and is a great song.

The opening track “Gutted and Burned Alive” is another example of how good the guitar work is on this album. It’s a song in which the Cannibal Corpse vein comes through strongly. For those who appreciate true death thrash, the second song “Jurisprudence of Carnage” is one of the best tracks on the album. It’s heavy, has killer riffs and an imposing brutality. The vocals on this track are dirty, deliberately not so filthy, and bring to mind old grindcore.

“Drowning Hypoxemia” has guitar lines that will have you headbanging without a doubt. Somehow it has a kind of current Krisiun feel (where speed doesn’t rule all the time). Another one I’d put on the list of the best is the nervous “Academid Degree of Putefraction”.

The song “Generalised Hypoxia” is dirty and reminded me of the first Pestilence album. The riff is filthier and the atmosphere denser. “Suppurated Turgescent Necrosis” is an updated version from the time when the band was called Cauterization and presents death metal that sounds more like the old “death core”. A very good track for the time it was composed.

The album ends with the crushing “Hypovolemic Shock”, which has some slower moments, but is still an intense song.

The band decided to revisit their origins and add some material from their past as a bonus, including the 1994 Rehearsal Demo from the Cauterization era and the 1993 Rehearsal Demo. Both pieces of material are extremely underground and that’s why they sound the way they should: dirty, chaotic and totally underground. The band was raw, but the excellent ideas were present in these compositions. Listening to the album proves this, showing a band that is currently precise, brutal and heavy. And with a quality of creation that stands out on the national scene.

The cover art cannot go unmentioned and is a beautiful, putrid creation that connects perfectly with PESTICIDE‘s music. “Death Compendium” is an album that should be in the collection of Brazilian and foreign death bangers. This is pure death metal from the underground.
