PAIN OF SOUL – Gray Bird Melody (CD 2024)

Os blumenauenses do Pain Of Soul acabaram de lançar nas plataformas digitais o seu mais novo trabalho, “Gray Bird Melody”, de forma independente. Depois de quase onze longos invernos, frio e cinza, surgiu o novo full length, o último de estúdio tinha sido “The Rustle of the Leaves” de 2013. A dupla que sempre esteve à frente da Pain Of Soul, Joel Sebold, (voz gutural e guitarra) e Daniele Martendal (vocalista) que  estão na luta desde 2000, e agora na companhia de novos integrantes: Mailon Bugmann, (guitarras e violão), Aline Bonates, (baixo) e Eduardo Follmer (bateria), lançaram esse trabalho que é uma obra-prima!

Apesar de estarem muito tempo longe do estúdio, a banda não perdeu a capacidade e a criatividade de criar boas músicas, com qualidade técnica, belas melodias, guitarras com riffs, bases e solos bem construídos e cheio de sentimentos, com muito peso, passagens melancólicas, bateria sempre bem trabalhada, mesclando passagens rápidas quando a música pede, e momentos cadenciados, com um baixo dando peso e consistência, além dos vocais guturais de Joel, contrastando com os vocais angelicais e lindos de Daniele.

O disco foi gravado no estúdio Hurricane, em Porto Alegre (RS), com produção de Sebastian Carsin e ficou com uma excelente qualidade. Arte da capa feita por Marcos Marques.

São nove faixas, incluindo os singles lançados antes do lançamento oficial do álbum, para as faixas: “Pharaoh’s Funeral” (que ganhou um videoclipe muito bem produzido, procure no YouTube) e “Bitter as Bad Wine”, que tiveram ótima recepção do público e imprensa especializada. 

A Pain Of Soul continua fazendo o que de melhor eles sabem fazer: Gothic Doom Metal! Porém, com novos elementos e com uma pegada Heavy Metal e algumas faixas, por exemplo, em “Pharaoh’s Funeral”, onde a banda inclui belas passagens de violão, melodias de música árabe, guitarras bem trabalhadas, bateria muito bem executada com peso e um solo de guitarra magnífico, com uma pegada bem Heavy Metal.

O disco todo é uma perfeição! Além de “Pharaoh’s Funeral”, eu destacaria ainda as faixas: “Gray Bird Melody”, “Beam Of Light” e “Madness Maze”. Só essa trinca que abre o disco já nos leva ao mundo de Morfeu e nos faz viajar em um sonho ou pesadelo, em um mundo sombrio e triste. Porém, o que nos acalenta a alma cheia de dor são as belas melodias e um instrumental forte e coeso, denso e mórbido, com vocais líricos e angelicais, com outros mais brutos, áspero, cavernoso e gutural.

Com certeza, “Gray Bird Melody” estará na minha lista dos melhores discos lançados em 2024. É fato que a Pain Of Soul também lançou um dos melhores discos de sua discografia até agora e deu passos largos em sua evolução musical e mostra como essa formação está unida e numa vibe muito boa, e espero que eles continuem levantando a bandeira do Gothic Doom Metal por muito tempo! 

Podem ouvir esse disco por inteiro, ele não soa sonolento, pelo contrário, você escuta ele e quando você vê está ouvindo ele de novo e de novo. Foi o meu caso. Já que sou um grande admirador da banda! Faixas como “Serenity” e “Past Winters” nos fazem refletir: por que um estilo Doom Metal não tem tantos fãs no Brasil? 

Talvez esse disco faça que as pessoas que não conhecem o estilo após ouvi-lo, procurem conhecer os outros trabalhos da Pain Of Soul e outras bandas brasileiras que executam sinfonias tristes e que desperte neles a vontade de se aprofundar nos arrastar de correntes e viajar nas melodias fúnebres e no mundo de contrastes entre o belo e o feio, branco e negro. Porque realmente Gray Bird Melody tem esse poder de transmitir esse mundo cinza e nublado. Essa dualidade da vida e da morte, da alegria e da tristeza! Por enquanto, esse disco só saiu nas plataformas digitais. Mas no próximo ano sairá a versão física e quero ele na minha coleção, com certeza! Que o pássaro cinza voe livre cantando melodias tristes, há todos os amantes do bom e clássico Doom Metal!

Pain Of Soul from Blumenau have just released their latest album, “Gray Bird Melody”, independently on digital platforms. After almost eleven long, cold and gray winters, the new full length has emerged, the last studio album having been 2013’s “The Rustle of the Leaves”. The duo that has always fronted Pain Of Soul, Joel Sebold, (guttural voice and guitar) and Daniele Martendal (vocalist) who have been fighting since 2000, and now in the company of new members: Mailon Bugmann, (guitars and acoustic guitar), Aline Bonates, (bass) and Eduardo Follmer (drums), have released this work that is a masterpiece!

Despite being away from the studio for a long time, the band hasn’t lost its ability and creativity to create good songs, with technical quality, beautiful melodies, guitars with riffs, bases and solos that are well constructed and full of feeling, with a lot of weight, melancholic passages, drums that are always well worked, mixing fast passages when the song calls for it, and slow moments, with a bass that gives weight and consistency, as well as Joel’s guttural vocals, contrasting with Daniele’s angelic and beautiful vocals.

The album was recorded at Hurricane studio, in Porto Alegre (RS), with production by Sebastian Carsin and is of excellent quality. Cover art by Marcos Marques.

There are nine tracks, including the singles released before the album’s official release, for the tracks: “Pharaoh’s Funeral” (which got a very well-produced music video, check it out on YouTube) and “Bitter as Bad Wine”, which had a great reception from the public and the specialized press.

Pain Of Soul continue to do what they do best: Gothic Doom Metal! However, with new elements and a heavy metal feel in some tracks, for example in “Pharaoh’s Funeral”, where the band includes beautiful guitar passages, Arabic music melodies, well-crafted guitars, very well-executed drums with weight and a magnificent guitar solo, with a very heavy metal feel.

The whole album is perfection! In addition to “Pharaoh’s Funeral”, I would also highlight the tracks: “Gray Bird Melody”, “Beam Of Light” and “Madness Maze”. Just this trio, which opens the album, takes us to the world of Morpheus and makes us travel in a dream or nightmare, in a dark and sad world. But what soothes our pain-filled souls are the beautiful melodies and the strong, cohesive, dense and morbid instrumentation, with lyrical, angelic vocals and others that are more brutal, harsh, cavernous and guttural.

For sure, “Gray Bird Melody” will be on my list of the best albums released in 2024. It’s a fact that Pain Of Soul have also released one of the best albums of their discography so far and have made great strides in their musical evolution and it shows how this line-up is united and in a very good vibe, and I hope they continue to raise the banner of Gothic Doom Metal for a long time to come!

You can listen to this album in its entirety, it doesn’t sound sleepy, on the contrary, you listen to it and the next thing you know you’re listening to it again and again. That was the case for me. I’m a big fan of the band! Tracks like “Serenity” and “Past Winters” make us think: why doesn’t doom metal have so many fans in Brazil?

Perhaps after listening to this album, people who don’t know the style will try to get to know Pain Of Soul‘s other work and other Brazilian bands that play sad symphonies and that will awaken in them the desire to delve into the dragging of chains and travel through the funeral melodies and the world of contrasts between the beautiful and the ugly, white and black. Because “Gray Bird Melody” really does have the power to convey this gray, cloudy world. That duality of life and death, joy and sadness!

For the time being, the album is only available on digital platforms. But the physical version will be out next year and I want it in my collection for sure! May the gray bird fly free singing sad melodies, for all lovers of good, classic Doom Metal!
