Tenho buscado, na medida do possível, ouvir bandas “novas” de Death Metal que agreguem algo aos valores tradicionais da velha escola, de forma que a criatividade seja estimulada sem que os pilares fundamentais do estilo sejam despedaçados.
É isso que os estadunidenses do NOTHINGNESS têm a oferecer com o seu recém-lançado segundo disco “Supraliminal”. O material saiu pelo selo italiano “Everlasting Spew Records” em CDs, Fitas Cassete e arquivo digital. Há confirmação de que haverá opções em Vinil mais adiante.
Se o leitor quiser ter uma ideia prévia de como soa a banda, sugiro que dê uma boa olhada na capa do álbum. A arte utilizada é caótica, abstrata, densa, de aspecto simultaneamente doentio e repulsivo, ainda que contenha cores vibrantes. Esse caldeirão também sintetiza a sonoridade genialmente inusitada do quinteto.
Pulando para a faixa 6, intitulada “Inviolate Viscera”… faixa de elementos técnicos intricados, ancorados em uma rifferama absurda, que progride brilhantemente ao longo dos pouco menos de três minutos. A insanidade desse som me chamou muito a atenção, e após rápida pesquisa, descobri que tem a participação do “YaH” nas guitarras, membro da SUFFERING HOUR (EUA). O vocal “DgS” também participou em duas faixas.
“YaH” também atuou na estrondosa “Catapulted Into Hyperspace”, veloz e extrema toda vida, com um trampo foda do batera “Jason Hirt” (GHOST BATH) e um solo de guitarra alucinante no segmento final.
A riqueza de referências e influências vai além, com sons repletos de elementos Doom e Sludge, caso de “Temple of Broken Swords” (que groove foda, e que atmosfera matadora), “The Anvil” (pesadíssima, fazendo jus ao título) e “Festering Abstraction” (dissonante e magistral). A caótica faixa de abertura “Curse of Creation” conta igualmente com toques Doom, mas destaca-se mesmo pela sequência de riffs monstruosos.
Outro traço presente na música do NOTHINGNESS é a dissonância, empregada em boa medida e com extremo bom gosto. Um exemplo é “Horrendous Incantation”, que deverá agradar igualmente quem curte Death Metal Old School em estado bruto.
Como ponto mais baixo da obra, a sétima “Beacon of Loss”. Diferente em estrutura, arrastada e demasiadamente extensa, acaba por tirar momentaneamente o foco. Já o encerramento vai muito bem com “Decimation Mechanism”, destruidora e dona de riffs viciantes após sua breve introdução atmosférica.
O segundo álbum de estúdio do NOTHINGNESS é excelente, colocando-se tranquilamente entre os melhores trabalhos lançados nesse início de 2023. Composições únicas, com instrumental suntuoso, complementado pelos vocais sólidos de “Barclay Olson”.
Altamente recomendável aos fãs de GUTVOID (CAN), ALTARS (AUS), ULCERATE (NZL), SUFFERING HOUR (EUA), IMMOLATION (EUA), SEDIMENTUM (CAN), CONVULSING (AUS), VACUOUS (GBR).

I’ve been trying, as often as possible, to listen to “new” Death Metal bands which try and add something to the traditional values of the old school, in a way that creativity is stimulated without turning the fundamental pillars of the style into rubble.
That’s what the US band NOTHINGNESS (Minneapolis, MN) has to offer with their brand-new second album “Supraliminal”. The record was released via Italian label “Everlasting Spew Records” on CDs, Cassettes, and digital files. The Vinyl options should be available later on (Spring 2023).
The honorable reader would like to get a preview of what the band sounds like, I reckon… so I’d suggest taking a good look at the album cover. The illustration is chaotic, abstract, dense, with a simultaneously sick and repulsive aspect, even though it consists of vivid, vibrant colors. Such cauldron also synthesizes the quintet’s brilliantly unusual sound.
Skipping to track 6, titled “Inviolate Viscera”… a piece of intricate technical elements, anchored in absurd riffage, which cleverly progresses over the short span of three minutes. This tune’s insanity really caught my attention, and after quick research, I found out it has “YaH” as a guest on guitars, one of SUFFERING HOUR’s (USA) members. Their vocalist “DgS” also performed on two tracks, offering additional vocals.
“YaH” also played on the thunderous “Catapulted Into Hyperspace”, fast and extreme all the way, presenting a badass job by drummer “Jason Hirt” (GHOST BATH) and a mind-blowing guitar solo in its final section.
The wealth in references and influences goes further, there are quite a few songs filled with Doom and Sludge elements as “Temple of Broken Swords” (what a great groove, and killer atmosphere), “The Anvil” (even heavier than the title implies) and “Festering Abstraction” (dissonant and masterful). The chaotic opening track “Curse of Creation” also carries traces of Doom, but it actually stands out for the astonishing sequence of monstrous riffs.
Another distinctive trait present in NOTHINGNESS’ music is dissonance, employed in good measure and with extreme good taste. A good example is “Horrendous Incantation”, which should equally please anyone into Old School Death Metal in its purest state.
As the album’s lowest point, the seventh track “Beacon of Loss”. Different in structure, drawn out and repetitive, it ends up taking the focus away (briefly, though). Closure goes very well with “Decimation Mechanism”, a killer piece built on addictive riffs after its brief atmospheric introduction.
“Supraliminal” is an excellent sophomore album, easily placing itself among the finest early 2023 releases. Unique compositions and sumptuous instrumentals, complemented by the solid harsh vocals by “Barclay Olson”.
Highly recommended album for fans of GUTVOID (CAN), ALTARS (AUS), ULCERATE (NZL), SUFFERING HOUR (USA), IMMOLATION (USA), SEDIMENTUM (CAN), CONVULSING (AUS), VACUOUS (GBR).
