Os californianos do MINENWERFER voltam à carga pouco mais de três anos depois do aclamado “Alpenpässe”, o terceiro e mais bem-sucedido álbum de estúdio da entidade, onde o Black Metal cru dos primórdios da formação ganhou boa dose de melodia, resultando em um excepcional trabalho e agregando números às suas fileiras de seguidores.
A fórmula experimentada em “Alpenpässe” não deixa de estar presente. Porém, o novo trabalho intitulado “Feuerwalze” e previsto para 10/03/23 via “Osmose Productions” é também um retorno bem-sucedido à crueza, ferocidade e rispidez que marcaram o nascimento do então projeto solo.
O álbum mantém a temática preferida dos membros da banda, voltada à Primeira Guerra Mundial (1914 – 1918), com foco específico na brutal Batalha do Somme (França, julho a novembro de 1916), que ceifou cerca de 450 mil vidas entre forças britânicas, francesa e alemãs.
O som do apito que abre “Cemetery Fields” é o sinal para as tropas avançarem em direção à “terra de ninguém”, quase como uma ordem direta para entregar-se à morte certa. O ritmo superveloz, calcado na bateria implacavelmente esmurrada, dá o tom da insanidade do álbum. Black Metal atroz, de riffs imundos, leads doentios e vocais desesperados. Apesar da violência desmedida, a produção é excelente e entrega um som com níveis adequados de nitidez.
“Feuerwalze” é absolutamente brutal, de ótima técnica e variações rítmicas. As guitarras oferecem alguma melodia, em contraponto às constantes sensações de aflição e desalento. Também despejam solos delirantes e dissonantes.
“Eternal Attrition” tem início mais atmosférico, com efeitos sonoros de marcha e percussão marcial. O ritmo médio é preponderante, com solos inspirados de guitarra no segmento introspectivo que divide a faixa.
Os gritos dos soldados feridos no campo de batalha podem ser ouvidos na abertura de “Nachtschreck”, faixa cadenciada com alta carga de tensão, som destacado de baixo e excelente trabalho de guitarras.
A brutalidade e veemência absurdas retornam com força total em “Sturmtruppen III (Sommekämpfer)”, uma das músicas mais agressivas da discografia dos caras. Pode-se imaginar um confronto de baionetas e tiros à queima roupa nas trincheiras, em meio à barragem ininterrupta de canhões e lançadores de morteiros ao fundo. Em “Shrapnel Exsanguination”, em contrapartida, o andamento é muito mais lento e agonizante, quebrado em sua seção derradeira por uma aceleração empolgante e letal.
A faixa “Labyrinthine Trench Sectors” finaliza os trabalhos com técnica apurada e ferocidade ímpar, principalmente por conta da percussão e baixo insanos. Novamente, belíssimo trabalho das guitarras e dos vocais pra lá de doentios.
Em suma, “Feuerwalze” é um excelente álbum que solidifica uma discografia respeitável do MINENWERFER até aqui, e os destaca como uma das formações de ponta do Black Metal dos Estados Unidos.
Trabalho imperdível para qualquer fã de metal extremo (não somente de Black Metal) com temática militar. Especialmente indicado aos admiradores de 1914 (UCR), ENDSTILLE (ALE), KANONENFIEBER (ALE), MARDUK (SUE) da fase “Panzer Division Marduk”, DECAYING (FIN), DIOCLETIAN (NZL), HAIL OF BULLETS (HOL), PANZERFAUST (CAN).
Bônus: Para quem quiser saber um pouco mais sobre a Primeira Guerra Mundial sem ter que ler livros intermináveis ou textos extensos, deixo duas dicas de filmes recentes: “Nada de Novo no Front” (2022 – Direção de “Edward Berger” – disponível na “Netflix”), talvez o melhor filme sobre a Grande Guerra que eu já vi. E “Eles Não Envelhecerão” (2018 – Direção de ‘Peter Jackson” – Sim, ele mesmo – disponível na “Amazon Prime Vídeo”) um documentário fantástico com cenas da época coloridas com perfeição e narrado com testemunhos dos sobreviventes.

The Californians of MINENWERFER are back in the battlefield just over three years after the acclaimed “Alpenpässe”, third and most successful studio album by the entity, where the Raw Black Metal of their early days was boosted with a fair share of melody, resulting in an exceptional work and adding numbers to their ranks of followers.
The formula employed on “Alpenpässe” is still present. However, the new record titled “Feuerwalze” and scheduled for 03/10/23 via “Osmose Productions” should also be seen as a successful return to the rawness, ferocity and harshness that marked the birth of the former solo project.
The new one keeps the band members’ favorite theme: World War I (1914 – 1918), with a specific focus on the brutal Battle of the Somme (France, July to November 1916), which claimed around 450,000 lives among British, French, and German forces.
The unsettling sound of the whistle that opens “Cemetery Fields” is the baneful signal for the troops to advance towards “no man’s land“, essentially commanding them to plunge into certain death. The super-fast rhythm, backed by relentlessly pounding drums, sets the tone for the album’s insanity. Atrocious Black Metal, with filthy riffs, sick leads, and desperate vocals. Despite the unmeasurable violence, the production is exemplary, not too crisp yet delivering adequate levels of balance and sharpness.
“Feuerwalze” sounds absolutely brutal, with great technique and rhythmic variations. The guitars offer some melody, in contrast to the constant feelings of distress and dismay. They also deliver delirious and somewhat dissonant solos.
“Eternal Attrition” begins more atmospheric, with marching sounds and martial percussion. The medium pace is predominant, with inspired guitar solos in the introspective section which divides the track.
The screams of wounded soldiers on the battlefield can be heard in the opening of “Nachtschreck”, a rhythmic track with a psychotic load of tension, highlighted bass sound and overall top-notch guitar work.
The absurd barbarism and vehemence return in full force on “Sturmtruppen III (Sommekämpfer)”, one of the most aggressive songs under MINENWERFER’s belt. One can easily picture a huge clash of bayonets and point-blank fire shots in and around the trenches, amidst the unending barrage of cannons and mortar launchers in the background. In “Shrapnel Exsanguination”, on the other hand, tempo is much slower and agonizing, broken in its final section by a breathtaking, lethal acceleration.
“Labyrinthine Trench Sectors” ends the record with refined technique and unique ferocity, mainly due to the insane percussion and bass lines. Again, beautiful guitar work and frenzied vocals.
All in all, “Feuerwalze” is an excellent album that solidifies MINENWERFER’s respectable discography thus far and highlights them as one of the leading US Black Metal names.
Mandatory album for any fan of extreme metal (not just Black Metal) with military theme. Especially recommended for fans of 1914 (UKR), ENDSTILLE (GER), KANONENFIEBER (GER), MARDUK (SWE) from the “Panzer Division Marduk” era, DECAYING (FIN), DIOCLETIAN (NZL), HAIL OF BULLETS (NED), PANZERFAUST (CAN).
Bonus: For those who would like to know a bit more about the Great War without having to read massive books or extensive texts, I recommend watching two exceptional and recent movies: “All Quiet On The Western Front” (2022 – Directed by “Edward Berger” – currently available on “Netflix”), perhaps the best film about WWI I’ve ever watched. And “They Shall Not Grow Old” (2018 – Directed by “Peter Jackson” – Yes, that one – currently available on “Amazon Prime Video”), a fantastic documentary with real footage, digitally restored and colored to perfection, with the moving testimony of several war survivors.
