MASTER – Saints Dispelled (Adv. CD 2024)

Minha relação com a música do MASTER sempre foi marcada por uma dualidade de sentimentos. Ao mesmo tempo que gosto do som da banda, sempre achei que faltava algo para me prender. Ouvindo esse novo álbum antecipadamente me fez perceber o que me faltava para abraçar o som deles de uma vez por toda. Energia ! Talvez os mais radicais me chamarão de louco, mas música gera percepções muito particulares e nem sempre as opiniões convergem em direções comuns.

Estamos aqui falando de uma das bandas mais veteranas da cena death metal mundial, que ano após ano sempre buscou criar seu trabalho de forma verdadeira e assim tem sido há quatro décadas. “Saints Dispelled” traz o MASTER com uma energia primitiva latente, uma crueza que faz a música da banda soar muito mais intensa. Obviamente a pegada quase punk desse material (uma marca que sempre esteve presente na carreira do Master) tem responsabilidade nisso. 

O álbum é aberto com a matadora “Destruction in June”, que tem um riff poderoso e uma vocalização de Mr. Speckmann que não deixa dúvidas que é o MASTER que estamos falando. Essa é uma faixa que une todas as características que eu citei mais acima.  “Walk in the Foosteps of Doom” mantém a pegada nesse mesmo patamar de impacto, mas ela é mais curta e direta. É uma música que certamente será um elemento incendiário em qualquer show da banda.

A faixa título até que possui uma sonoridade que poderia ser chamada de mais moderna, mas isso não é ruim, já que “Saints Dispelled” dita sua própria brutalidade com os dois bumbos martelando sem piedade. Aqui o death thrash do grupo aparece mais claramente.  O início de “Minds Under Pressure”, com sua bateria me fez esperar o velho Lemmy e seu Motörhead partirem para o ataque, o que criou uma sensação de nostalgia. A música toma seu rumo com um riff e bases de guitarra mais carregados de fúria e é uma excelente composição do bom e velho metal da morte.

“Find Your Life” é uma baita composição e vai colocar os death maníacos para bater cabeça. Não é uma música cheia de detalhes e é na simplicidade de sua linha principal que mora sua força. O punk e sua energia retornam fortes em “Marred and Diseased”. Essa é outra composição que vai surtir um grande efeito no público. Aqui os vocais em alguns momentos criam aquela rispidez que o velho Lemmy possuía. Excelente faixa.

Em “The Wiseman”, a banda inicia emulando uma sonoridade mais ligada ao Oriente Médio, algo diferente do que o MASTER normalmente faz, mas logo em seguida retorna à acidez e peso do metal da morte. É uma composição mais comum, mas tem sua energia e qualidades.  A última faixa da edição do álbum é “The Wizard of Evil”, uma faixa rápida, mas cadenciada. A versão em CD traz duas faixas bônus: “Nomads” – uma música mais rápida e realmente muito boa – e “Alienation of Insanity”, a maior do álbum, com mais de oito minutos, algo não tão comum para o MASTER. É uma música bastante focada no peso em boa parte de sua duração e com excelentes riffs e bases de guitarra.

Não sei se o álbum ganhará versão lançada no Brasil, mas se acontecer irá agradar os velhos fãs da banda e garantir que a música do MASTER continue disparando seu death thrash metal. Um excelente disco com toda a certeza.

My relationship with MASTER‘s music has always been marked by a duality of feelings. Whilst I like the band’s sound, I’ve always felt that there was something missing to hold me. Listening to this new album in advance made me realise what I needed to embrace their sound once and for all. Energy! Perhaps the most radical will call me crazy, but music generates very particular perceptions and opinions don’t always converge in common directions.

We’re talking here about one of the most veteran bands in the world death metal scene, who year after year have always sought to create their work in a true way and have done so for four decades. “Saints Dispelled” brings MASTER with a latent primitive energy, a rawness that makes the band’s music sound much more intense. Obviously the almost punk feel of this material (a hallmark that has always been present in Master‘s career) is responsible for this. 

The album opens with the killer “Destruction in June”, which has a powerful riff and a vocal from Mr Speckmann that leaves no doubt that this is MASTER we’re talking about. This is a track that combines all the characteristics I mentioned above.  “Walk in the Foosteps of Doom” maintains the same level of impact, but is shorter and more direct. It’s a song that will certainly be an incendiary element at any of the band’s concerts.

The title track has a sound that could be called more modern, but that’s not a bad thing, as “Saints Dispelled” dictates its own brutality with the two drums hammering mercilessly. Here the group’s death thrash comes out more clearly.  The beginning of “Minds Under Pressure”, with its drums, made me expect the old Lemmy and his Motörhead to go on the attack, which created a feeling of nostalgia. The song takes its course with a more furious riff and guitar leads and is an excellent piece of good old-fashioned death metal.

“Find Your Life” is a great song and will get death maniacs banging their heads. It’s not a song full of details and it’s in the simplicity of its main line that its strength lies. Punk and its energy come back strong in “Marred and Diseased”. This is another composition that will have a big effect on the audience. Here the vocals at times create that harshness that the old Lemmy possessed. An excellent track.

In “The Wiseman”, the band begins by emulating a more Middle Eastern sound, something different from what MASTER usually does, but then returns to the acidity and heaviness of death metal. It’s a more common composition, but it has its energy and qualities.  The last track on the album edition is “The Wizard of Evil”, a fast but cadenced track. The CD version comes with two bonus tracks: “Nomads” – a faster and really good song – and “Alienation of Insanity”, the longest on the album, at over eight minutes, something not so common for MASTER. It’s a very heavy song for most of its duration, with excellent riffs and guitar bases.

I don’t know if the album will be released in Brazil, but if it does, it will please the band’s old fans and ensure that MASTER’s music continues to fire its death thrash metal. An excellent album for sure.
