JUDAS PRIEST – Invincible Shield (CD 2024)

Os ingleses do JUDAS PRIEST não precisam de apresentações e cada lançamento deles vem cheio de expectativas, e sempre nos entregam um grandioso álbum de Heavy Metal e fazem alegria de nós, fiéis adoradores dos sacerdotes.

Desde a volta do “Metal God” Halford nos vocais do JUDAS PRIEST., a banda vem crescendo e evoluindo a cada lançamento, e conquistando o seu trono como sempre teve nos anos 70 e principalmente nos 80, seu auge absoluto. Nos anos 90 apesar de lançar um dos melhores discos da década, o inquestionável “Painkiller” (1990) a banda perdeu seu frontman e depois disso não conseguiu lançar mais um  disco clássico e seus lançamentos com Tim Ripper nos vocais são medianos e não são ruins, mas não agradavam  muito e com suas inovações modernas, não tinham mais o brilho de outra hora. 

Felizmente, Rob Halford voltou nos anos 2000 e já entrou chutando a porta com o fantástico disco: “Angel of Retribution” (2005) e logo em seguida com o play conceitual sobre “Nostradamus”. Acho que o disco ficou longo demais e, apesar de algumas ideias boas “Nostradamus” (2008) seja o disco mais fraco desse retorno com o metal God nos vocais. Já os próximos lançamentos agradaram e muito os mais tradicionais e conservadores admiradores do JUDAS PRIEST. 

“Redeemer of Souls” (2014) e “Firepower” (2018), principalmente esses dois últimos trabalhos, são essenciais para a banda chegar até esse disco tão perfeito. Lançado em março de 2024, o atual guitarrista Andy Sneap (live guitar) assumiu os botões e produziu o disco, e deixou uma produção perfeita, porém não plastificada e não artificial, como também resgatou os melhores momentos dos ingleses no auge dos anos 80. Tudo neste trabalho é uma volta aos melhores momentos e não só pelo nome que a banda carrega, mas também porque promete se tornar um clássico na carreira do JUDAS PRIEST. Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton (G), Richie Faulkner (G),Ian Hill (B) e Scott Travis (D) fizeram um disco “made steel” com muitas guitarras pesadas e ótimas melodias, bateria pesada com muitas viradas e pedais duplos, baixo como sempre pesado e bem executado e com os vocais maravilhosos de Halford.

O play abre com a faixa “Panic Attack”, uma pequena introdução antes de a música ganhar peso me lembrou o grande Rush. E logo após já entra uma base de guitarras pesadas e melodiosas, vocais magistrais de Halford e um solo magnífico!

“The Serpent And King” é outra devastação do mais puro Heavy Metal, é de encher os olhos de lágrimas, uma banda com mais de 50 anos e ainda tem amor e paixão pelo Metal. E The Serpent… com seus solos virtuosos, peso e os vocais de Halford, nos leva até o início dos anos 90 e o grandioso disco Painkillers.

“Invincible Shield” é outra matadora faixa! É um Speed Metal com a banda destruindo tudo com um belo solo de guitarras e as levadas de bateria de Scott Travis têm um grande destaque.

“Devil In Disguise” é um pouco mais cadenciada, mas pesada e até um pouco sombria, e com um solo maravilhoso cheio de melodias e sentimentos.

Os sacerdotes do metal invocam seus poderosos hinos metálicos: “Gates Of Hell”, “Crown Of Horns” e “As Gods Is My Witness”.  Nossa, são músicas que te levam para cima e te fazem bater cabeça e cantar as músicas e refrões com a banda. “Crown Of Horns” é com certeza minha nova música predileta dos ingleses. Com todos os músicos dando uma aula de técnica, solos melodiosos e sentimentais. O início de “As Gods…” e seu instrumental têm muito do clássico “Painkillers”. Peso, bateria quebrando tudo e os vocais mais agressivos de Rob.

“Trial By Fire”, “Escape From Reality”, “Sons Of Thunder”, “Giant Of Sky” e “Fight Of Your Life” nos mostram quanto o Judas é essencial nessa seara chamada metal! Os refrões de “Fight…” são contagiantes! Acredito que Richie Faulkner trouxe um gás jovial ao Judas e, com o tempo, ele foi ganhando mais espaço dentro da banda e das composições. As guitarras são muito bem executadas, com peso, belas melodias, bases poderosas e solos magníficos! É louvável eles colocarem o Glenn Tipton nos créditos da banda, nas fotos e inclusive nas composições, mas sabemos que o Parkinson que ele tem dificulta ele compor ou executar essas novas músicas. Mas Faulkner é, acima de tudo, um grande fã dos mestres ingleses e o DNA do Priest está ali e, como já citamos: esse álbum tem muito do passado da banda, porém sempre com a genialidade “prestiana” de sempre!

Fechando esse disco maravilhoso e com certeza estará na minha lista dos melhores do ano, as duas últimas músicas: “Vicious Circle” e “The Lodger”. E finalizam com chave de ouro tamanho, qualidade, peso e melodias que têm essas duas faixas. Não tem como não citar as performances do mestre Halford, ele é como o vinho: quanto mais velho, melhor. Está cantando muito! Seus agudos e suas interpretações, sua capacidade de entregar melodias vocálicas e poderosas e cheias de amor e sentimentos. Faulkner, já citamos seu ótimo trabalho com as guitarras e o baixo de Ian Hill soa poderoso, consistente e pesado. Mas Scott Travis é um monstro como sempre, mas desde “Painkiller” eu não o via entregando uma performance tão poderosa como em “Invincible Shield” com ótimas viradas, pedais duplos, peso e contratempos fantásticos!

Eu não esqueço a primeira vez que ouvi e peguei um disco dos caras lá em 1993, na casa do meu amigo Roger Silva, no Jardim Alice, em Foz do Iguaçu. Eu ali senti que minha vida nunca mais seria a mesma. Óbvio que meu amigo gravou em uma K7 todos os discos da banda e ele é um fanático fã do Priest e tinha tudo na sua coleção. A partir daí, o Priest nunca mais saiu da minha vida e do meu coração. Passando tanto tempo, a banda continua lançando trabalhos que me fazem ser e lembrar daquele garoto lá em 1993, que nunca mudou o seu jeito de ser e pensar e amar o JUDAS PRIEST e o Heavy Metal. Obrigado JUDAS PRIEST por fazer minha vida tão feliz desde então!!!

The English band JUDAS PRIEST need no introduction and each release is full of expectations, and they always deliver a great heavy metal album and make us faithful worshippers of the priests happy.

Since the return of “Metal God” Halford on vocals in JUDAS PRIEST, the band has been growing and evolving with each release, and conquering its throne as it always had in the 70s and especially in the 80s, its absolute peak. In the 90s, despite releasing one of the best albums of the decade, the unquestionable “Painkiller” (1990), the band lost its frontman and after that failed to release another classic album and their releases with Tim Ripper on vocals were average and not bad, but they didn’t please much and with their modern innovations, they no longer had the luster of another time.

Fortunately, Rob Halford returned in the 2000s and kicked the door in with the fantastic album “Angel of Retribution” (2005) and soon after with the concept play “Nostradamus”. I think the album was too long and, despite some good ideas, “Nostradamus” (2005) is the weakest album of this comeback with Metal God on vocals. On the other hand, the next releases were very pleasing to the more traditional and conservative JUDAS PRIEST fans.

“Redeemer of Souls” (2014) and “Firepower” (2018), especially the latter two, are essential for the band to reach this perfect record. Released in March 2024, current guitarist Andy Sneap (live guitar) took over the buttons and produced the record, and left a perfect production, but not plasticized and not artificial, as well as rescuing the best moments of the English at the height of the 80s. Everything about this album is a return to the best moments and not just because of the name the band carries, but also because it promises to become a classic in JUDAS PRIEST‘s career. Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton (G), Richie Faulkner (G), Ian Hill (B) and Scott Travis (D) have made a “made steel” record with lots of heavy guitars and great melodies, heavy drums with lots of turns and double pedals, bass as always heavy and well executed and Halford’s wonderful vocals.

The play opens with the track “Panic Attack”, a short intro before the song gains weight reminded me of the great Rush. It’s followed by heavy, melodious guitars, Halford’s masterful vocals and a magnificent solo!

“The Serpent And King” is another devastation of the purest Heavy Metal, it’s tear-jerking, a band that’s over 50 years old and still has a love and passion for Metal. And The Serpent… with its virtuoso solos, heaviness and Halford’s vocals, takes us back to the early 90s and the great “Painkiller” album.

“Invincible Shield” is another killer track! It’s Speed Metal with the band destroying everything with a beautiful guitar solo and Scott Travis’ drumming is a highlight.

“Devil In Disguise” is a little slower, but heavy and even a little dark, with a wonderful solo full of melodies and feelings.

The metal priests invoke their powerful metal hymns: “Gates Of Hell”, “Crown Of Horns” and “As Gods Is My Witness”.  Wow, these are songs that take you up a notch and make you bang your head and sing the songs and choruses with the band. “Crown Of Horns” is definitely my favorite new song by the English. With all the musicians giving a lesson in technique, melodious and sentimental solos. The beginning of “As Gods…” and its instrumental have a lot of the classic “Painkiller” in them. Heavy, crashing drums and Rob’s most aggressive vocals.

“Trial By Fire”, “Escape From Reality”, “Sons Of Thunder”, “Giant Of Sky” and “Fight Of Your Life” show us how essential Judas is in this field called metal! The choruses of “Fight…” are infectious! I believe that Richie Faulkner brought a youthful energy to Judas and, over time, he gained more space within the band and the compositions. The guitars are very well executed, with weight, beautiful melodies, powerful bases and magnificent solos! It’s commendable that they put Glenn Tipton in the band’s credits, in the photos and even in the compositions, but we know that his Parkinson’s makes it difficult for him to compose or perform these new songs. But Faulkner is, above all, a great fan of the English masters and Priest’s DNA is there and, as we’ve already mentioned: this album has a lot of the band’s past, but always with the usual “Prestian” genius!

Closing this wonderful album, which will definitely be on my list of the best of the year, are the last two songs: “Vicious Circle” and “The Lodger”. And they finish with a golden key – the size, quality, weight and melodies of these two tracks. It’s impossible not to mention Halford’s performances, he’s like wine: the older he gets, the better he gets. He’s singing a lot! His treble and his interpretations, his ability to deliver powerful vocal melodies full of love and feeling. Faulkner, we’ve already mentioned his great guitar work and Ian Hill’s bass sounds powerful, consistent and heavy. But Scott Travis is a monster as always, but not since “Painkiller” have I seen him deliver such a powerful performance as in “Invincible Shield” with great turns, double pedals, weight and fantastic backbeats!

I can’t forget the first time I heard and picked up a record by the guys back in 1993, at my friend Roger Silva’s house in Jardim Alice, in Foz do Iguaçu. There I felt that my life would never be the same again. Of course, my friend recorded all the band’s albums on a K7 and he is a fanatical Priest fan and had everything in his collection. From then on, Priest never left my life or my heart. After all this time, the band continues to release works that make me remember that boy back in 1993, who never changed his way of being and thinking and loving JUDAS PRIEST and Heavy Metal. Thank you JUDAS PRIEST for making my life so happy ever since!!!
