INSOMNIUM – Anno 1696 (2023)

 A essa altura do campeonato, o INSOMNIUM é uma banda que não requer muita apresentação. Um dos nomes mais reconhecidos e respeitados do Death Metal Melódico mundial, os Finlandeses desenvolvem seu som desde 1997.

 Seu novo trabalho é o nono álbum de estúdio, e pode ser classificado como um disco conceitual. O excelente “Anno 1696” relata um ano sombrio na história da Finlândia, de catástrofes naturais, frio anormal prolongado, intolerância religiosa e perseguição às bruxas, fatores que mataram cerca de 30% da população do país dentro de dois anos.

 O som “1696” inicia a jornada sob atmosfera Folk, com guitarras acústicas e vocais sussurrados e sombrios. Pouco após dois minutos, transforma-se em algo tradicionalmente INSOMNIUM, uma fusão balanceada e quase perfeita entre agressividade, técnica e melodias de bom gosto e altíssima qualidade.

 “White Christ” é uma das faixas que ganharam vídeo. Cadenciada, com a bateria bem marcada e batida quase marcial, flui com naturalidade e encorpa em função das ótimas guitarras (os leads são belíssimos) e teclados. Destaque adicional para o vocal dinâmico de “Niilo Sevänen”.

 A terceira “Godforsaken” também foi escolhida como um dos sons de trabalho, e também tem seu vídeo. Um curto coral feminino antecede a bateria veloz e cheia de blasts. Essa ficou bem mais acessível, apesar da bateria mais extrema em alguns segmentos. Muito em função dos teclados marcantes, corais femininos e guitarras exageradamente melosas.  

 “Lilian” retoma as guitarras acústicas brevemente, evoluindo rápido para um Death Melódico cativante, agradável de ouvir e soberbo tecnicamente. Seguindo num ótimo momento no álbum, “Starless Paths” alterna segmentos mais pegados, pesados e intensos, com outros atmosféricos, repletos de beleza, feeling e tensão.

 Em “The Witch Hunter” as guitarras criam belíssimas harmonias logo de saída, e a faixa ganha características progressivas interessantes. Empolga também pelo ritmo médio e pelo trampo impecável de bateria, um dos destaques individuais do disco.   

 A reta final do disco tem a balada “The Unrest”, que traz vocais limpos e base com guitarras acústicas e teclados. Ponto negativo do álbum, pelo menos é mais curta que a média. O final chega com “The Rapids” e sua abertura atmosférica, interrompida por um instrumental que poderia (e deveria) ser mais presente na obra, muito mais encorpado e vigoroso. Em diversos momentos, chega a lembrar o grande EDGE OF SANITY da época do clássico absoluto “Crimson”. Faixa grandiosa, melhor do álbum.

 Considero “Anno 1696” um trabalho sólido do INSOMNIUM, que vem apontando nos trabalhos recentes para um redirecionamento musical muito menos extremo. De qualquer forma, aqui a banda segue com seu Death Metal Melódico de ponta.

Ansioso para vê-los ao vivo na turnê norte-americana onde o INSOMNIUM é o co-headliner com o ENSLAVED, no final desse mês. Certamente, será um grande evento.

At this point, INSOMNIUM should not require an introduction. One of the most renowned and respected names in Melodic Death Metal worldwide, the Finns have been developing and refining their sound since the late 90s.

  Their new release is the ninth studio album, and it can be classified as a concept album. The excellent “Anno 1696” recounts a dark period in Finland’s history, with natural disasters, prolonged abnormal cold, religious intolerance and persecution of “witches”, factors that contributed to the killing of 30% of the country’s population within two years.

  “1696” starts the journey under a Folkish atmosphere, with acoustic guitars and whispered, dark vocals. Two minutes in, it turns into something a lot closer to traditional INSOMNIUM, a balanced and almost perfect fusion of aggressiveness, good technique, and tasty, high-quality melodies.

  “White Christ” is one of the tracks to receive a video. Mid-paced, with well-marked drums and an almost martial beat, it flows naturally and builds up, due to the great guitars (the leads are beautiful) and keyboards. The dynamic vocals of “Niilo Sevänen” present an additional highlight.

  Third piece “Godforsaken” was also picked as one of the working songs, and also received its video. A short female chorus precedes the fast, blast-filled drumming. This one turned-out way more accessible, despite the extreme drums in some sections. Much due to the striking keyboards, female choirs, and excessively mellow, sweet guitars.

  “Lilian” briefly returns to the acoustic guitars, quickly evolving into a catchy piece of Melodic DM, pleasant and technically superb. Following a great moment on the album, “Starless Paths” alternates more gritty, heavy, and intense segments, with atmospheric ones, filled with beauty, feeling and tension.

  In “The Witch Hunter” the guitars create beautiful harmonies right away, and the track incorporates interesting progressive traits. It’s also exciting for its medium pace and impeccable drumming, certainly one of the album’s highlights.

  The final stretch of the record has the ballad “The Unrest”, which features clean vocals and a base with acoustic guitars and keyboards. Unfortunately, the lowest point of the album. At least, it is shorter than average. The end arrives with “The Rapids” and its atmospheric introduction, interrupted by an instrumental that could (and should) be a lot more present in the record, much more substantial and vigorous. At several moments, it reminded me of the great EDGE OF SANITY from the era of the absolute classic “Crimson”. A great track, and personal favorite off the album.

  I consider “Anno 1696” a solid work by INSOMNIUM, a band which has been pointing, in recent releases, to a much less extreme direction. Anyways, at least here they keep performing their cutting-edge brand of Melodic Death Metal.

  Looking forward to seeing them live on the North American tour, co-headlined by INSOMNIUM and ENSLAVED, later this month. It will certainly be a remarkable event.
