HOUSE OF ATREUS – Orations (Adv. MCD 2024)

Uma das minhas bandas preferidas da cena extrema norte-americana dos últimos anos é sem dúvida alguma o HOUSE OF ATREUS. O grupo foi formado em 2011 na cidade de Minneapolis e conta com dois álbuns de estúdio: “The Spear and the Ichor That Follows”, de 2015 e “From the Madness of Ixion”, de 2018.

A banda foca em uma sonoridade mais black heavy metal e que musicalmente lembra muito o Grand Belial´s Key e o Arghoslent, mas sem toda a polêmica envolvendo as escolhas políticas de seus membros. O que realmente me atrai nessa sonoridade é essa mistura muito particular do black metal com o heavy metal e é muito original, coisa rara hoje em dia. Talvez o único outro lugar do mundo onde essa mistura também exista (mas com uma abordagem absolutamente diferente) seja a Grécia.

O EP inicia com “Orations/Reascension of Mastery”, uma grande composição com um trabalho fenomenal das guitarras. É muito difícil descrever o som dos caras e como a sua abordagem musical é construída, mas é algo realmente incrível de se ouvir. Em meio a uma música rápida, a melodia que se manifesta através das guitarras, cria uma atmosfera única para a música do grupo. Os solos são realmente muito bons.

A próxima faixa é “They Wounded Sovereignty”, que se inicia de forma mais pesada e embarcam em uma cavalgada desenfreada com a bateria e riffs certeiros que tem um pouco de speed metal em seus momentos mais rápidos. As melodias são belíssimas, assim como os arranjos. Em “Under an Accursed Dinasty” as guitarras perdem um pouco a melodia mais apurada e focam em um riff mais direto. A própria música em si tem uma energia diferente, mas você reconhece imediatamente que o estilo do HOUSE OF ATREUS está ali.

A melhor música desse material é também a mais diferente. “Morphos of Degeneration” é pura agressão, riffs matadores e peso sem medidas. A impressão que dá é que nem é a mesma banda, mas é uma composição matadora. É tudo mais contundente. Eu realmente gostei dessa música e a ouço com frequência desde que recebi esse material para review.

“Cathedral of Ancestry” vem a seguir e retoma um pouco mais a sonoridade do grupo, mas também possui outros elementos. O que me vem a cabeça é que talvez o HOUSE OF ATREUS esteja já construindo sua própria sonoridade e acredito que nessa faixa e na anterior, isso seja muito verdadeiro. Duas das melhores músicas do EP tem uma abordagem mais diferenciada em relação às primeiras. O solo dessa música é realmente muito bom.

Fechando esse MCD temos uma versão de “Riding the Storm”, do lendário Running Wild, que se prestarmos bem atenção à música do próprio HOUSE OF ATREUS, mostra ser uma de suas influências diretas. A música faz parte do tracklist de um dos melhores álbuns do grupo alemão, “Death or Glory”, lançado em 1989.

Quando você ouve a música, uma versão matadora para ser bem sincero, você entende realmente de onde vem muito da sonoridade do grupo. Uma versão black heavy para ninguém colocar defeito, erguer os punhos e bater cabeça com uma cerveja gelada nas mãos.

One of my favourite bands from the North American extreme scene in recent years is undoubtedly HOUSE OF ATREUS. The group was formed in 2011 in the city of Minneapolis and has two studio albums: “The Spear and the Ichor That Follows”, from 2015 and “From the Madness of Ixion”, from 2018.

The band focuses on a more black heavy metal sound that musically is very reminiscent of Grand Belial’s Key and Arghoslent, but without all the controversy surrounding the political choices of its members. What really attracts me to this sound is this very particular blend of black metal and heavy metal, and it’s very original, which is rare nowadays. Perhaps the only other place in the world where this mix also exists (but with an absolutely different approach) is Greece.

The EP opens with “Orations/Reascension of Mastery”, a great composition with phenomenal guitar work. It’s very difficult to describe the guys’ sound and how their musical approach is constructed, but it’s something really incredible to listen to. In the middle of a fast song, the melody that manifests itself through the guitars creates a unique atmosphere for the group’s music. The solos are really good.

The next track is “They Wounded Sovereignty”, which begins in a heavier way and embarks on an unbridled cavalcade with the drums and precise riffs that have a bit of speed metal in their faster moments. The melodies are beautiful, as are the arrangements. In “Under an Accursed Dinasty”, the guitars lose a bit of the more refined melody and focus on a more direct riff. The song itself has a different energy, but you immediately recognise that the HOUSE OF ATREUS style is there.

The best song on this material is also the most different. “Morphos of Degeneration” is pure aggression, killer riffs and weight without measure. The impression is that it’s not even the same band, but it’s a killer composition. Everything is more forceful. I really liked this song and have listened to it often since I received this material for review.

“Cathedral of Ancestry” follows and takes up a bit more of the group’s sound, but it also has other elements. What comes to mind is that perhaps HOUSE OF ATREUS is already building its own sound and I believe that in this track and the previous one, this is very true. Two of the best songs on the EP have a more differentiated approach than the first. The solo on this song is really good.

Closing this MCD is a version of “Riding the Storm”, by the legendary Running Wild, which, if you pay close attention to HOUSE OF ATREUS’ own music, proves to be one of their direct influences. The song is part of the tracklist for one of the German group’s best albums, “Death or Glory”, released in 1989. When you hear the song, a killer version to be honest, you really understand where a lot of the group’s sound comes from. A black heavy version for no-one to fault, raise your fists and bang your head with a cold beer in your hands.
