FUNERAL STORM – Chthonic Invocations (Adv. CD 2024)

Após o incrível debut álbum “Arcane Mysteries”, lançado em 2019, finalmente os gregos do FUNERAL STORM chegam ao seu segundo álbum. O segundo trabalho de uma banda é sempre um passo importante na construção de um legado e um teste de fogo para qualquer banda.

O debut álbum do FUNERAL STORM foi realmente um álbum magnífico, resgatando de forma poderosa o antigo black metal helênico, oferecendo uma experiência grandiosa com melodias marcantes, uma atmosfera que envolvia o ouvinte. Já esse segundo trabalho do grupo não consegue repetir o grande trabalho que foi seu álbum de estreia.

Não que “Chthonic Invocations” seja um álbum ruim e não é mesmo. Trata-se de um excelente trabalho que traz tudo aquilo que qualquer fã do metal negro grego espera, mas ainda assim falta o brilho de antes. As músicas são boas, mas não vão para outro patamar.

O álbum trabalha muito bem com as ideias e influências, que vão fundo na obra dos velhos Rotting Christ, Varathron e Necromantia e isso cria momentos realmente muito bons, outros nem tanto. Há no ar aquela sensação de “já ouvi esse riff ou esse arranjo antes”.

Mas é como falei acima, o disco é um trabalho muito bom e tem momentos poderosos como em “Behold the Dark”, “The Void” (que me trouxe à mente o Nightfall), “The Covenant of Old” e a minha faixa favorita do álbum “Mistress of the Night (The Gathering Begins)”.

Gostei muito da arte do álbum. Ela possui uma pegada mais old school e misteriosa, o que encaixa bem com a própria musicalidade do álbum. Para aqueles que realmente apreciam o black metal helênico, “Chthonic Invocations” é um álbum a ser ouvido, independentemente de qualquer outra razão.

Coloque um bom fone de ouvido, aumente o volume, feche os olhos e aprecie esse viagem pelo metal obscuro do FUNERAL STORM.

After the incredible debut album “Arcane Mysteries”, released in 2019, the Greeks of FUNERAL STORM have finally released their second album. A band’s second album is always an important step in building a legacy and a litmus test for any band.

FUNERAL STORM’s debut was a truly magnificent album, powerfully reviving ancient Hellenic black metal, offering a grandiose experience with striking melodies and an atmosphere that enveloped the listener. The group’s second album, however, fails to repeat the great work that was their debut.

Not that “Chthonic Invocations” is a bad album, it’s not. It’s an excellent piece of work that brings everything that any fan of Greek black metal would expect, but it still lacks the lustre of before. The songs are good, but they don’t go to the next level.

The album works very well with the ideas and influences, which go deep into the work of the old Rotting Christ, Varathron and Necromantia and this creates some really good moments, others not so much. There’s that feeling in the air of “I’ve heard this riff or this arrangement before”.

But as I said above, the album is a very good piece of work and has powerful moments such as “Behold the Dark”, “The Void” (which brought Nightfall to mind)”, “The Covenant of Old” and my favourite track on the album “Mistress of the Night (The Gathering Begins)”.

I really liked the album artwork. It has a more old school and mysterious feel to it, which fits in well with the musicality of the album itself. For those who really appreciate Hellenic black metal, “Chthonic Invocations” is an album to listen to, regardless of any other reason.

Put on some good headphones, turn up the volume, close your eyes and enjoy this journey through FUNERAL STORM‘s dark metal.
