FROSTEN – With Sigils and Infernal Signs (Reissue 2022)

O FROSTEN ainda é um segredo bem guardado do usualmente subestimado Black Metal Britânico, algo que o selo alemão “Purity Through Fire” está tratando de mudar com este excepcional lançamento.

 Disponível desde o final de maio em CDs, o disco de estreia “With Sigils and Infernal Signs” havia saído originalmente em 2020, exclusivamente em fitas cassete na época.

 Trata-se de um dos projetos do experiente músico “Azrael”, conhecido nos mais profundos círculos europeus do metal negro por nomes como ETHEREAL FOREST, THY DYING LIGHT, HELVELLYN, HEATHEN DEITY, entre outros.

 No FROSTEN, o músico é o responsável pelas composições, letras, vocais, guitarras, violão e baixo. Para o seu álbum de estreia, contou com o apoio do baterista contratado “Julian Foster” (ARCANE NORTH).

 O que me motivou a resenhar esse lançamento foi, primordialmente, a linha de Black Metal desenvolvida: Sonoridade fiel às tradições da segunda onda, acenando mais diretamente às grandes referências da escola Sueca. Porém, os britânicos conseguem se diferenciar, em meio a uma multitude de outras bandas.

 O FROSTEN consegue revisitar a atmosfera do final dos anos 90 com excelência e total naturalidade, trabalhando suas melodias soturnas e, sobretudo marcantes, com maestria. Há um senso definitivo de grandiosidade no Black Metal Britânico, tornando-o irresistível.

 Tais melodias soam vigorosas e triunfantes, mas há, ao mesmo tempo, uma vibe permanentemente insensível e cortante. Sem lançar mão de teclados, a criação de uma atmosfera densa e impactante ficou a cargo, principalmente, das guitarras. E elas não decepcionam em nenhum momento.

 Normalmente, uma intro serve para criar um clima, transportar o ouvinte para a dimensão onde habita o álbum. Aqui, a intro “Under a Twilight Sky” cumpre esse papel e vai além. Soa como uma manifestação sombria e diabolicamente apoteótica, suscitando expectativa pela imensa tormenta que se forma.

 Toda a glória profana dos reinos infernais é desencadeada com “Ov The Black Flame” e seus riffs geniais, de forte inclinação melódica, a percussão veloz aniquiladora, o baixo perfeitamente audível e os vocais penetrantes e torturados de “Azrael”. Faixa majestosa e dominante, que já vale o play.

 E a abertura viciante de “My Words Become Flesh”, marchando sinistra e orgulhosamente? Sinta as labaredas do Tártaro chamuscando suas vestes enquanto “Azrael” canta o refrão (difícil não cantar junto). Quando falo em grandiosidade, falo de coisas como o riff próximo do minuto 3:00, que direciona a música a uma passagem violentíssima, acelerada e, especialmente, memorável.

 A pancadaria desenfreada retoma com a faixa título “With Sigils and Infernal Signs”, de percussão apocalíptica. O respiro aos dois minutos introduz uma passagem lenta, de atmosfera angustiante. Guitarras e baixo escalam progressivamente em tensão e dissonância, com retorno glorioso à brutalidade e rispidez.

 Um lado tranquilo do músico se revela em “At Autum’s End”, uma instrumental de pegada Folk, com belas guitarras acústicas. Concluindo a jornada, temos a colossal “A Shadow in the Fog”, de início ameaçador e riffs em tremolo matadores. Após a brutal aceleração, ganha com os segmentos estupidamente pesados. Som genial, talvez a melhor composição do álbum.  

 Deixo aqui meu agradecimento ao selo germânico “Purity Through Fire”. Um golaço, esse lançamento em CDs. Álbum de estreia grandioso do FROSTEN, espero ouvir mais deles em breve. True English Black Metal, gelado, macabro e intransigente, concebido com intensidade e musicalidade diferenciada.

FROSTEN remains a well-kept secret, among the usually underrated British Black Metal scene, something that German label “Purity Through Fire” intends to change with this exceptional release.

 Available since the end of May on CDs, the debut album “With Sigils and Infernal Signs” was originally released in 2020, at the time exclusively on cassette tapes.

 This is one of the projects of seasoned musician “Azrael”, known in the deepest European black metal circles for names such as ETHEREAL FOREST, THY DYING LIGHT, HELVELLYN, HEATHEN DEITY, among others.

 In FROSTEN, he is responsible for compositions, lyrics, vocals, guitars, acoustic guitars and bass. For his debut album, he was supported by session drummer “Julian Foster” (ARCANE NORTH).

 What led me to review this release was, primarily, his Black Metal style: Faithful to the unhallowed traditions of the second wave, waving more directly at the greatest references of the Swedish school. However, the British manage to produce a sound of their own.

 FROSTEN manages to revisit the atmosphere of the late 90’s with excellence and total spontaneity, crafting its dark and striking melodies with mastery. There’s an ultimate sense of grandeur to British Black Metal, rendering it irresistible.

 Such melodies sound vigorous and triumphant, but there is, simultaneously, an enduring heartless and icy vibe. Without using keyboards, the creation of a solid and poignant atmosphere was mainly arranged by guitars. And they never disappoint at it.

 Usually, intros serve to create ambience, to transport the listener to the dimension where the album dwells. Here, intro “Under a Twilight Sky” plays that role and goes way beyond. It sounds like a dark and diabolically apotheotic manifestation, arousing anticipation for the massive storm that brews.

 All the unholy glory of infernal realms is unleashed with “Ov The Black Flame” and its brilliant, melodic driven riffs, annihilating fast percussion, perfectly audible bass and “Azrael’s” piercing, tortured vocals. Majestic and dominant track, worth the money by itself.

 Need to mention the addictive opening of “My Words Become Flesh”, marching ominously and proudly. Feel the flames of Tartarus licking your robes as “Azrael” hatefully spits forth the chorus (it’s hard not to sing along). When I say grandiosity, I’m talking about things like the riff around the 3:00 minute mark, which leads the song to a swirling, fast-paced and, especially, memorable section.

 Unbridled havoc resumes with the apocalyptic title track “With Sigils and Infernal Signs”. The breather at two minutes introduces a slow passage, of anguished atmosphere. Guitars and bass progressively escalate in tension and dissonance, with a glorious return to brutality.

 A mellow side of the musician is revealed in “At Autum’s End“, a folk-style instrumental, with beautiful acoustic guitars. Rounding out the journey is the colossal “A Shadow in the Fog”, with a menacing start and killer tremolo riffs. After the astonishing acceleration, it benefits from crushing heaviness. Great song overall, perhaps the record’s best composition.

 I leave here my heartfelt thanks to the staff at “Purity Through Fire” for the great move. A grand FROSTEN debut album, honestly hope to hear more from them as soon as possible. True English Black Metal, Icy, ghastly and imperious, conceived with high intensity and musicality.
