CONTORTED – Deities of Uncreation (EP 2023)

Quando se pensa em metal extremo vindo da gélida Noruega, mais precisamente de Bergen, cidade que já deu origem a um considerável número de bandas de black metal, é exatamente nesse estilo que pensamos, mas o CONTORTED vem batendo no peito e deixando claro que o metal da morte é o que molda sua música e postura.

A banda cita o death metal sueco como influência, mas felizmente não temos aqui mais uma banda ligando o HM-2 no talo e copiando descaradamente aquele estilo. O CONTORTED oferece sim, um death metal que traz algo do velho e bom death metal sueco, mas há bastante do death metal americano e europeu que acabam construindo uma abordagem mais ampla e isso, por si só, faz a banda soar realmente poderosa.

São apenas quatro composições e quando a primeira delas se inicia, exatamente a faixa título “Deities of Uncreation”, já entendemos que há aqui uma banda com muito poder a apresentar. O início da música me lembrou os momentos de selvageria pura dos americanos do Angel Corpse, mas isso vai se transformando em uma composição mais diversificada, com muito peso e até mesmo um toque de complexidade proporcionado por um momento mais focado no feeling, com um excelente arranjo de baixo e um clima denso que é construído pelas guitarras. Uma faixa brutal, mas elegante ao mesmo tempo.

“Eon of the Dissident” é uma música pesadíssima e aqui fica evidente o quão boa é a produção desse material. O peso das guitarras é descomunal, assim como a sua própria execução, que faz os headphones tremerem. O andamento é mais cadenciado e com riffs e bases cheias de energia. Na sequência vem a cheia de feeling “Usurper”, uma música que tem uma profundidade imensa e um clima obscuro. Os arranjos de guitarra são os responsáveis por essa atmosfera.

Infelizmente o EP chega ao fim com “Carnal Endeavor”, que acelera tudo e libera a total destruição com uma sequência matadora de riffs cortantes. O som aqui me lembra o Vomitory, com algo mais melódico em seu riff, mas totalmente agressivo. Uma música impactante com absoluta certeza.

O CONTORTED tem aqui um EP que deve abrir mais portas para a sua música e certamente para um álbum de estúdio completo. O pacote já está completo e a evolução desses caras só vai deixar tudo ainda mais impactante. Grande trabalho.

When you think of extreme metal from icy Norway, more precisely from Bergen, a city that has given rise to a considerable number of black metal bands, that’s exactly the style you think of, but CONTORTED has been beating its chest and making it clear that death metal is what moulds its music and stance.

The band cites Swedish death metal as an influence, but fortunately we don’t have yet another band turning up the HM-2 and shamelessly copying that style. CONTORTED does offer death metal that brings something of the good old Swedish death metal, but there’s plenty of American and European death metal to build a broader approach and that, in itself, makes the band sound really powerful.

There are only four compositions and when the first of them starts, the title track “Deities of Uncreation”, you realise that this is a band with a lot of power to show. The beginning of the song reminded me of the moments of pure savagery of the Americans Angel Corpse, but this is transformed into a more diversified composition, with a lot of weight and even a touch of complexity provided by a moment more focused on feeling, with an excellent bass arrangement and a dense climate that is built by the guitars. A brutal track, but elegant at the same time.

“Eon of the Dissident” is a very heavy song and here it becomes clear how good the production of this material is. The weight of the guitars is unbelievable, as is the playing itself, which makes your headphones shake. The tempo is slower, with riffs and bases full of energy. Next comes the feel-good “Usurper”, a song with immense depth and a dark atmosphere. The guitar arrangements are responsible for this atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the EP comes to an end with “Carnal Endeavor”, which speeds everything up and unleashes total destruction with a killer sequence of cutting riffs. The sound here reminds me of Vomitory, with something more melodic in its riff, but totally aggressive. An impactful song for sure.

CONTORTED have an EP here that should open more doors for their music and certainly for a full-length studio album. The package is already complete and the evolution of these guys will only make everything even more impactful. Great work.
