CONJURETH – The Parasitic Chambers (Adv. CD 2023)

Não tenho a menor ideia de como será o ano novo, esse 2023 que rapidamente se aproxima. Espero que seja melhor que os anos marcados pela pandemia. Mas já posso afirmar que 2023 começará muito bem no campo do Death Metal.

 O CONJURETH é um trio formado em 2018 em San Diego, na Califórnia, dono de um dos logos mais ilegíveis e bacanas do Death Metal mundial. Em 2021 eles lançaram seu grandioso álbum de estreia “Majestic Dissolve” via “Memento Mori” da Espanha, quando foram aclamados como uma das bandas jovens mais promissoras do cenário atual.

 Pouco mais de um ano depois, a banda reemerge para confirmar as expectativas e solidificar seu nome entre os grandes do Death Metal mundial com o excepcional “The Parasitic Chambers”, previsto para o final de janeiro/23 pelo mesmo selo espanhol.

 Mais uma vez, um disco com arte de capa inspiradíssima. Assim como o primeiro, o novo trabalho também conta com ilustração de paisagem desoladora da “Erskine Designs”, do talentoso armênio “Mark Erskine”.

 Aos não familiarizados com o CONJURETH, trata-se de Death Metal que une o melhor das escolas tradicionais dos EUA e do norte da Europa, notadamente Finlândia e Suécia. Há fortes elementos de Thrash na sonoridade, bem como acenos explícitos às bandas que abusam da técnica, porém mantendo sempre os pés fincados em terra firme.

 O som de abertura “Smothering Psalms” tem início com a citação “Witchcraft is dead and discredited. Are you bent on reviving forgotten horrors?” “How do we know, Sir? What is dead?” que pode ser traduzida como “A bruxaria está morta e desacreditada. Você está empenhado em reviver horrores esquecidos?” “Como podemos saber, Senhor? O que está morto?” Frases do filme cult britânico “Blood On Satan’s Claw” de 1971, disponibilizado no Brasil como “O Estigma de Satanás”.

 Ao final da citação, explode nos falantes um Death Metal extremamente vigoroso, de ótima técnica. Os riffs estrondosos, guitarras de timbre perfeito, vocais monstruosos, baixo pulsante, percussão aniquiladora de linhas criativas e sem abuso de blasts.

 A tendência de desenvolver riffs técnicos, criativos e com características progressivas segue dominante em “Dimensional Ascendancy”. Em “Devastating Cataclysmic Unearthing” o peso absurdo e as variações rítmicas dão o tom, dessa vez com riffs de estrutura mais direta.

 “Cremated Dominion” é caos e insanidade total, mesmo nos segmentos menos velozes. Destaque para os solos doentios e altamente viajantes. “Deathless Sway of Torsos Calm” soa complexa e desafiadora, principalmente para o batera. Uma das minhas preferidas pela estrutura inusual, percussão e guitarras fantásticas.

 “A Blood Romance” mantém o pique brutal, atropelando o ouvinte inapelavelmente ao longo dos seus três minutos e meio. “The Ancient Presence” segue moendo e agredindo, porém sua estrutura é mais elegante, calcada em riffs memoráveis.

 “In Mortal Thresholds” atinge o ápice da rifferama intricada e complexa, acompanhando linhas de bateria tão sinistras quanto. Altamente técnica, épica e impressionante. Sua sucessora “From Ceremonies Past” é bem menos exótica, mais direta e ríspida. Ainda assim, conta com partes delirantes, que fazem o ouvinte poeticamente refletir: “que porra é essa?”.

 A faixa de encerramento “The Unworshipped II” é como uma sequência da última música do primeiro álbum, como o título aqui entrega. Tem pegada Death Doom, desviando totalmente do roteiro. Sem problemas, soa como algo diferente que entrega qualidade da mesma forma (principalmente por conta das guitarras).

 O segundo álbum de estúdio do CONJURETH é esmagador, colossal e flui bem demais. Deverá agradar em cheio aos fanáticos por Death Metal em geral. Algumas referências: TOMB MOLD (CAN), NECROT (EUA), MORTUOUS (EUA), CORPSESSED (FIN), SULPHUR AEON (ALE), BLOOD INCANTATION (EUA).

I have absolutely no idea what the new year is going to be like, this 2023 that rapidly approaches. I hope it’s better than the couple last marked by the pandemics. What I can already say is that 2023 will start very well in the Death Metal camp.

  CONJURETH is a trio formed in 2018 in San Diego, California, owners of one of the most illegible and coolest logos in the Death Metal universe. In 2021 they released their grand debut album “Majestic Dissolve” via “Memento Mori”, the great extreme metal label from Spain, when they were hailed as one of the most promising young bands in the current scene.

  A little over a year later, the band re-emerge to confirm expectations and solidify their name among the greats of Death Metal with the exceptional “The Parasitic Chambers”, scheduled for late January/23 under the same Spanish company.

  Once again, an album with a very inspired cover art. As well as the first one, the new album also features a desolate landscape illustration by “Erskine Designs”, aka the talented Armenian “Mark Erskine”.

  For those unfamiliar with CONJURETH, it’s Death Metal which packs the best of traditional schools in the US and Northern Europe, notably Finland and Sweden. There are strong Thrash elements in the sound, as well as explicit nods to highly technical bands, but always keeping their feet firmly planted on the ground.

  Opening act “Smothering Psalms” begins with the quote “Witchcraft is dead and discredited. Are you bent on reviving forgotten horrors?” “How do we know, Sir? What is dead?” Sentences picked from the 1971 British cult horror flick “Blood On Satan’s Claw”.

  As the sinister quote ends, an extremely vigorous Death Metal, played with fine technique, explodes over the speakers. Guitars showing off a perfect tone, firing thunderous riffs, monstrous vocals, pulsating bass, powerful and aggressive percussion with creative lines, without relying exclusively on blasts. Quite a magnificent start.

  The tendency to develop technical, creative riffs with progressive traits remains dominant in “Dimensional Ascendancy”. In “Devastating Cataclysmic Unearthing” the absurd heaviness and rhythmic variations set the tone, this time displaying more traditional riffs.

  “Cremated Dominion” is total chaos and insanity, even during slower segments. Props for the sick and highly trippy guitar solos. “Deathless Sway of Torsos Calm” sounds complex and challenging, especially for the drummer. One of my favorites for its unusual structure, fantastic percussion and guitar works.

  “A Blood Romance” keeps the brutal edge, crushing the listener relentlessly throughout its three and a half minutes. “The Ancient Presence” follows pushing and charging, even with its elegant structure, based on memorable riffs.

  “In Mortal Thresholds” reaches the apex of intricate and complex riffage, accompanying drum lines which sound just as sinister. Highly technical, epic, and mind-boggling track. Its successor “From Ceremonies Past” is less exotic, more straightforward, and harsher. Even so, it has beautiful, delirious parts, which make the listener poetically reflect: “what the actual fuck?”.

  The closing track “The Unworshipped II” works like a sequel to the last song off the first album, as the title clearly indicates. It’s actually a Death Doom piece, completely deviating from the script. And that ain’t no problem, as it delivers quality in a different way.
