HERSIR – Hateful Draugar from the Underground (CD 2025)

O HERSIR foi formado em 2016 e somente agora em 2025 chega ao seu primeiro álbum de estúdio após lançar três demo tapes “The Old Domains of a Wicked Wraith” (2021), “Hateful Draugar” (2023) e “Echoes from the Oubliette” (2023). O quarteto sueco traz em sua veia o mais puro black metal da velha escola, que invoca riffs frios e cortantes, teclados que vão criando uma atmosfera tétrica e vocais que espalham o desespero em todo o ambiente.

A banda tem uma sonoridade que resgata com sucesso aquele black metal cheio de ódio e melodia que era uma característica nos anos 90. Musicalmente falando dá para classificar o HERSIR dentro de um espectro que abrange influências de grupos como o velho Emperor, Burzum, Enslaved, Limbonic Art, entre outros.

A produção do álbum já mostra essa herança gélida. Me agradou muito o fato do HERSIR não se prender unicamente ao lado mais primitivo do estilo e utilizar sua criatividade para unir a crueza do metal negro daquela época com uma melodia envolvente e que soa obscura e épica ao mesmo tempo. Isso fica gritante quando você ouve “The Ironclad Fighter of Hjaðningavíg”.

O início de “The Fiddler” é magnífico e mostra que o black metal é um estilo com uma alma profunda quando feito da forma que deve ser. Uma grande música. “Walking the Way of Giants” me lembrou muito o Enslaved em seu álbum “Vikingligr Veldi”. As guitarras soam com um feeling gigantesco e o vocal aqui é como um murmúrio das profundezas.

Uma música que soa diferente, mas não menos maléfica é “Holocaust Winter”. Os vocais aqui são mais cavernosos e cheios de ódio. Mais brutalidade e selvageria são vomitadas diretamente de “Purification by Fire”, que possui um riff principal perfeito.

O álbum finaliza com “Blood Runs from the Hörgr” e “Divinations at the Old Springs”, sendo está última uma música mais cadenciada e com um grande feeling épico.

“Hateful Draugar from the Underground” é um excelente trabalho que resgata com honra e blasfêmia um black metal que ficou gravado em ferro e fogo nos livros infames de um tempo passado. Se você aprecia essas características, o HERSIR é uma banda que deve ser ouvida.

HERSIR was formed in 2016 and has only just released its first studio album in 2025 after releasing three demo tapes: “The Old Domains of a Wicked Wraith” (2021), “Hateful Draugar” (2023) and “Echoes from the Oubliette” (2023). The Swedish quartet has the purest old-school black metal in its vein, which invokes cold, cutting riffs, keyboards that create a dark atmosphere and vocals that spread despair throughout the room.

The band has a sound that successfully recaptures that black metal full of hate and melody that was a characteristic of the 90s. Musically speaking, HERSIR can be classified within a spectrum that includes influences from groups such as the old Emperor, Burzum, Enslaved, Limbonic Art, among others.

The album’s production already shows this icy heritage. I really liked the fact that HERSIR didn’t just stick to the more primitive side of the style and used their creativity to unite the rawness of black metal from that era with an engaging melody that sounds dark and epic at the same time. This is evident when you listen to “The Ironclad Fighter of Hjaðningavíg”.

The beginning of “The Fiddler” is magnificent and shows that black metal is a style with a deep soul when done the way it should be. A great song. “Walking the Way of Giants” reminded me a lot of Enslaved on their album“Vikingligr Veldi”. The guitars sound gigantic and the vocals here are like a whisper from the depths.

A song that sounds different, but no less evil, is “Holocaust Winter”. The vocals here are more cavernous and full of hate. More brutality and savagery spews forth directly from “Purification by Fire”, which has a perfect main riff.

The album closes with “Blood Runs from the Hörgr” and “Divinations at the Old Springs”, the latter being a slower song with a great epic feel.

“Hateful Draugar from the Underground” is an excellent piece of work that rescues with honor and blasphemy a black metal that was engraved in iron and fire in the infamous books of a bygone era. If you appreciate these characteristics, HERSIR is a band you should listen to.
