CELESTIAL SEASON – Mysterium III (CD 2024)

Poucas bandas têm o privilégio de estar no lugar certo e na hora certa. Melhor ainda, é fazer parte desde o início da criação de um estilo, ajudá-lo no desenvolvimento e no caso aqui o Doom metal. Se não bastasse só isso, os holandeses têm com certeza um clássico, ou melhor, uma obra-prima, lançado e cultuado no mundo todo por amantes das sinfonias fúnebres e arrastar de correntes, em mausoléus frios e obscuros. O CELESTIAL SEASON nasceu em 1991 e desde então lançou demo tape, EPS e álbuns completos. Entre eles, o clássico dos anos 90: “Solar Lovers” (1995) Quem não conhece a banda e se interessou em escutá-la, eu também indicaria o full length: “Forever Scarlet Passion” (1993)

A banda, no final dos anos 90 e início dos anos 2000, lançou discos fracos: “Chrome” (1999) e “Lunchbox Dialogues” (2000) e talvez por isso hibernou por 20 longos anos. Lucas van Slegtenhorst,(B) Jason Köhnen, (D) Stefan Ruiters, (V) Olly Smit, (G) Pim van Zanen, (G) Jiska ter Bals (Violino) e Elianne Anemaat (Cello) resolveram reunir-se e lançaram o bom trabalho de seu retorno “The Secret Teachings”, de 2020. Com uma boa recepção a esse trabalho, resolveram lançar uma trilogia sob a alcunha de “Mysterium”. E com essa ideia lançaram o primeiro trabalho intitulado, “Mysterium l” (2022). E logo em seguida o “Mysterium ll” (2022). No primeiro trabalho, os caras mergulharam em um oceano de lágrimas e tristeza, e o som é um maravilhoso Doom Metal tradicional! 

No segundo trabalho, os holandeses mostraram que sabem o que fazem, têm bom gosto e sabem escrever um disco perfeito! Incorporaram muitos instrumentos clássicos como violino, piano e Cello, misturados com as tradicionais: guitarras, baixo, bateria, vocal cavernoso e limpos, peso e agressividade do Doom Metal, e ficou muito bom! Agora chegamos ao terceiro “Mysterium Ill” (2024). É com certeza o melhor da trilogia! Celestial Season faz exatamente isso que todos nós “doomsters” esperavam dos holandeses, um grandioso álbum de Doom Metal. Muitas passagens carregadas de tristeza, peso, densidade, vocais limpos e grunhidos de morte e desespero.

Riffs carregados, arrastados, bateria mesclando peso, cadência, baixo estridente, pianos, violinos e cellos dando aquele clima viajante e etéreo. Uma obra-prima! O play inicia com a faixa: “Fecund Universe” e que música maravilhosa! Já na introdução um violino solta notas melancólicas e uma bateria entra em seguida e vai levando a música para uma viagem profunda dentro de nossas almas, os vocais melancólicos combinam perfeitamente com esse clima tétrico e o violino volta no meio da música e finaliza com passagens atmosféricas.

“Black Goat of the Woods” tem uma introdução com vozes e efeitos, sinos e uma bateria tribal e logo entram os vocais, guitarras, é uma viagem ao som psicodélico. É um Stoner Doom com guitarras pesadas e viajantes.

“Empty Corridors”, essa faixa é maravilhosa! Logo no início, tem uma introdução no piano, dá um clima de missa negra e o tradicional Doom Metal toma conta com guitarras pesadas, riffs arrastados, baixo seguro e a bateria precisa. Aquele piano está ali, no fundo, o tempo todo, dando aquele clima fúnebre. Em algumas partes, principalmente para o final, me lembrou o My Dying Bride do início dos anos 90… mas não uma cópia e sim, uma influência ou homenagem.

“Daughter of the Lake”, com guitarras pesadas e bateria quase parando, entra um violino com notas lúgubres e conduz a música até o final com um sentimento desolado e grunhidos de morte, morte amada! Que faixa poderosa! E a sinfonia soturna não pode parar e mais hinos de tristeza: “Nepenthe”, “We Never Stray” e “The Last Day”. O CELESTIAL SEASON sabe como gravar um disco e compor músicas que levam os doomers para outra dimensão: fecham os olhos e imaginem vocês em um penhasco alto, rodeado por árvores e um gramado verde, a sua frente o mar com suas cores azuis-turquesa, o barulho das ondas quebrando nas pedras e o vento batendo na sua face, e você se pergunta: o que somos nós neste universo? E a resposta vem e te diz: não somos nada! Menos que um grão de areia no cosmo e na imensidão do universo. 

É isso que o CELESTIAL SEASON e o Doom Metal trazem até nós, amantes de música arrastada e lúgubre. A sutileza de nos fazer questionamentos nessa vida vil e de nossa existência frágil. Os holandeses entregaram um trabalho tétrico, atmosférico e, ao mesmo tempo, belíssimo! Fechando o disco com a faixa, “Chained Phoenix” me lembrou os conterrâneos deles, o The Gathering da fase “Mandylion”, (1995) em algumas partes, mas o “DNA” do CELESTIAL SEASON está ali e, como sempre, perfeito! As letras dessa trilogia baseiam-se nos segredos do ensino e nos mistérios da vida, ou seja: tem muito de filosofia e ensinamentos ocultistas! 

A banda está no seu melhor momento, sombrio, melancólico, pesado e eles até conseguem incorporar os instrumentos clássicos e os tradicionais instrumentos que fazem o Metal ser poderoso e respeitado. Em resumo, o disco muitas vezes soa como uma orquestra, porém carregada de tristeza, peso, riffs e bases de guitarras cheio de sentimentos, bateria arrastada, cadenciada e baixo pulsante e grave, além de vocais da morte muitas vezes guturais e outras vezes mais sussurrados e deixa as músicas mais profundas e fúnebres.

 E o violoncelo, violino e piano só ajudaram a deixar as composições mais profundas. As influências dos holandeses como sempre estão ali, tem algo do Anathema do início, My Dying Bride do início, Katatonia e aquela pegada de Rock setentista e psicodélica, e neste novo trabalho achei algumas passagens dos conterrâneos deles, o The Gathering. O Doom Metal, dentro do universo metálico, sempre foi um estilo diferente e, até por isso, poucos metalheads têm apreço por tal estilo de música. Não é uma música fácil de assimilar, tanto suas ideias líricas quanto sua proposta musical. Mas aqui está um ótimo trabalho para quem aprecia as sinfonias fúnebres. Se o amigo leitor tiver interesse, eu vos digo: escute a trilogia toda!

ENGLISH VERSION:

Few bands have the privilege of being in the right place at the right time. Even better is to be part of the creation of a style right from the start, to help it develop, in this case doom metal. If that wasn’t enough, the Dutch certainly have a classic, or rather a masterpiece, released and worshipped the world over by lovers of funeral symphonies and the dragging of chains in cold, dark mausoleums. CELESTIAL SEASON was born in 1991 and has since released demo tapes, EPS and full-length albums. Among them, the 90s classic “Solar Lovers” (1995). If you don’t know the band and are interested in hearing them, I would also recommend their full length “Forever Scarlet Passion” (1993).

At the end of the 90s and beginning of the 2000s, the band released weak albums: “Chrome” (1999) and “Lunchbox Dialogues” (2000), which is perhaps why they hibernated for 20 long years. Lucas van Slegtenhorst, (B) Jason Köhnen, (D) Stefan Ruiters, (V) Olly Smit, (G) Pim van Zanen, (G) Jiska ter Bals (Violin) and Elianne Anemaat (Cello) decided to reunite and released their comeback album “The Secret Teachings” in 2020. With a good reception to this work, they decided to release a trilogy under the name “Mysterium”. And with this idea they released the first work entitled, “Mysterium l” (2022). And then “Mysterium ll” (2022). In the first album, the guys plunged into an ocean of tears and sadness, and the sound is wonderful traditional Doom Metal!

On their second album, the Dutch have shown that they know what they’re doing, have good taste and can write a perfect record! They incorporated many classical instruments such as violin, piano and Cello, mixed with the traditional: guitars, bass, drums, cavernous and clean vocals, heaviness and aggressiveness of Doom Metal, and it was very good! Now we come to the third “Mysterium Ill” (2024). It’s definitely the best of the trilogy! CELESTIAL SEASON does exactly what all of us “doomsters” expected from the Dutch, a great doom metal album. Many passages full of sadness, heaviness, density, clean vocals and grunts of death and despair.

Heavy, dragging riffs, drums mixing heaviness and cadence, thundering bass, pianos, violins and cellos giving the album a traveling, ethereal atmosphere. A masterpiece! The play starts with the track “Fecund Universe” and what a wonderful song it is! In the intro, a violin plays melancholy notes and then the drums come in and take the song on a journey deep into our souls. The melancholy vocals go perfectly with this dark atmosphere and the violin comes back in the middle of the song and finishes with atmospheric passages.

“Black Goat of the Woods” has an intro with vocals and effects, bells and tribal drums and then the vocals and guitars come in, it’s a journey into psychedelic sound. It’s stoner doom with heavy, traveling guitars.

“Empty Corridors”, this track is wonderful! Right from the start, there’s a piano intro, it gives a black mass vibe and traditional Doom Metal takes over with heavy guitars, dragging riffs, confident bass and precise drums. That piano is there, in the background, all the time, giving it that funereal atmosphere. In some parts, especially towards the end, it reminded me of My Dying Bride from the early 90s… but not a copy, but an influence or homage.

“Daughter of the Lake”, with heavy guitars and drums almost coming to a halt, a violin comes in with mournful notes and leads the song to the end with a desolate feeling and grunts of death, beloved death! What a powerful track! And the gloomy symphony can’t stop and more anthems of sadness: “Nepenthe”, “We Never Stray” and “The Last Day”. CELESTIAL SEASON know how to record an album and compose songs that take doomers to another dimension: close your eyes and imagine yourself on a high cliff, surrounded by trees and a green lawn, in front of you the sea with its turquoise blue colors, the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks and the wind hitting your face, and you ask yourself: what are we in this universe? And the answer comes and tells you: we are nothing! Less than a grain of sand in the cosmos and in the immensity of the universe.

That’s what CELESTIAL SEASON and Doom Metal bring to us, lovers of dark and gloomy music. The subtlety of making us question this vile life and our fragile existence. The Dutch have delivered a work that is tetchy, atmospheric and, at the same time, beautiful! Closing the album with the track, “Chained Phoenix” reminded me of their countrymen, The Gathering from the “Mandylion” phase, (1995) in some parts, but the “DNA” of CELESTIAL SEASON is there and, as always, perfect! The lyrics of this trilogy are based on the secrets of teaching and the mysteries of life, in other words: there’s a lot of philosophy and occult teachings!

The band is at its best, dark, melancholic, heavy and they even manage to incorporate the classic and traditional instruments that make metal powerful and respected. In short, the album often sounds like an orchestra, but full of sadness, heaviness, riffs and guitar bases full of feeling, dragging, cadenced drums and pulsating, low bass, as well as death vocals that are often guttural and sometimes more whispery, making the songs deeper and more funereal.

 And the cello, violin and piano only help to make the compositions deeper. The influences of the Dutch are always there, there’s something of Anathema from the beginning, My Dying Bride from the beginning, Katatonia and that touch of seventies rock and psychedelia, and in this new work I found some passages of their countrymen, The Gathering. Doom metal, within the metallic universe, has always been a different style and, for this reason, few metalheads have an appreciation for this style of music. It’s not easy to assimilate, both its lyrical ideas and its musical proposal. But here is a great piece of work for those who appreciate funeral symphonies. If you’re interested, listen to the whole trilogy!
