MORBID STENCH – Doom & Putrefaction” – (2023)

O selo brasileiro Arauto da Morte fez um belo trabalho arqueológico e foi buscar nas profundezas do underground latino americano uma grata surpresa para os fãs die hard de death/doom metal. O MORBID STENCH foi formado em 2014 com membros oriundos de dois países: El Salvador e Costa Rica.

O primeiro lançamento do grupo ocorreu dois anos depois, com o EP “The Stench of Doom” vendo a luz do dia e apresentando a banda ao cenário mundial. Esse material que tenho em mãos (muito obrigado à Arauto da Morte Records) é o primeiro álbum oficial do MORBID STENCH, lançado originalmente em 2019 e que recebeu sua versão brasileira em 2023. E tenho que salientar que antes tarde do que nunca, pois temos aqui uma banda poderosa e um material que entrega um death doom de muita qualidade.

A banda não inventa, entrega o básico do estilo, mas o que entrega é realmente de uma qualidade inegável. A sonoridade do grupo é extremamente pesada, densa e usa de forma muito inteligente melodias que agregam ainda mais qualidade ao resultado final desse lançamento.

“The Eucharist” abre o álbum de forma perfeita. Os climas criados nessa composição são cativantes e a execução levada a cabo de forma ímpar. Já “Sempiternal Prophecies of Damnation” usa da mesma fórmula da faixa anterior, mas insere mais velocidade e agressividade. Aquele dois por um dita o caminho e a música se desenvolve em torno de um death metal mais tradicional. Sua partes mais lentas tem um enorme feeling, constrúido de forma muito simples.

O lado mais pesado retorna com “El Despojo de un Redentor”, que traz alguma melodias e texturas que me lembraram o My Dying Bride, mas dentro de uma abordagem mais death metal. A próxima faixa é “Disincarnated, Intoxicated, Mutilated” e é a que mais gostei. As bases de guitarra são mais obscuras, o andamento mais contido, mas não totalmente lento. Algo do velho Amorphis está entranhado no âmago dessa composição. Baita composição.

Outra excelente música é “The Apocryphal” e seu começo a la Death antigo. Ela foca em um andamento mais pesado e tem excelentes bases e riffs.

A última faixa carrega o nome da banda e fecha o álbum com o nível lá em cima. “Morbid Stench” tem um baita feeling em seus arranjos. Música carregada até o osso. As partes mais rápidas são muito foda e lembram os holandeses do Asphyx.

A produção do álbum e dessa versão brasileira são excelentes também. A banda lançou o seu segundo álbum em 2022 e é intitulado “The Rotting Ways of Doom”. Se esse novo trabalho for uma evolução natural do que foi apresentado aqui, com certeza é um grande trabalho. Certamente é um álbum que preciso conferir muito em breve.

The Brazilian label Arauto da Morte has done a fine archaeological job and searched the depths of the Latin American underground for a pleasant surprise for die-hard death/doom metal fans. MORBID STENCH was formed in 2014 with members from two countries: El Salvador and Costa Rica.

The group’s first release came two years later, with the EP “The Stench of Doom” seeing the light of day and introducing the band to the world stage. This material I have in my hands (many thanks to Arauto da Morte Records) is MORBID STENCH‘s first official album, originally released in 2019 and which received its Brazilian version in 2023. And I have to emphasise that it’s better late than never, because here we have a powerful band and material that delivers high-quality death doom.

The band doesn’t invent, they deliver the basics of the style, but what they do deliver is of undeniable quality. The band’s sound is extremely heavy, dense and cleverly uses melodies that add even more quality to the final result of this release.

“The Eucharist” opens the album perfectly. The atmosphere created in this composition is captivating and the execution is unrivalled. “Sempiternal Prophecies of Damnation” uses the same formula as the previous track, but adds more speed and aggression. That two-for-one dictates the path and the song develops around more traditional death metal. Its slower parts have a great feeling, built in a very simple way.

The heavier side returns with “El Despojo de un Redentor”, which brings some melodies and textures that reminded me of My Dying Bride, but within a more death metal approach. The next track is “Disincarnated, Intoxicated, Mutilated” and it’s the one I liked the most. The guitar bases are darker, the tempo more restrained, but not totally slow. There’s something of the old Amorphis at the heart of this composition. Great song.

Another excellent song is “The Apocryphal” and its beginning a la old Death. It focuses on a heavier tempo and has excellent bass and riffs.

The last track bears the band’s name and closes the album on a high note. “Morbid Stench” has a great feeling in its arrangements. Music loaded to the bone. The faster parts are very catchy and reminiscent of the Dutch Asphyx.

The production of the album and this Brazilian version are also excellent. The band released their second album in 2022, entitled “The Rotting Ways of Doom”. If this new work is a natural evolution of what was presented here, it’s certainly a great one. It’s certainly an album I need to check out very soon.
