MANTICORE é um nome que pode causar dúvidas, há alguns homônimos. Estou falando aqui do trio de Ohio, nos Estados Unidos, banda fundada em 2000 conhecida e muito respeitada no underground, praticante de Blackened Death Metal bestial / War Metal.
Desde sua criação, a entidade registrou uma quantidade considerável de material, desde demos, EPs, três álbuns de estúdio (o mais recente no longínquo 2012) e uma pancada de Splits, tendo gravado com bandas como FUNERAL PYRE, MORBOSIDAD, NECROHOLOCAUST, GRAVE UPHEAVAL, RITUAL SLAUGHTER, BESTIAL MOCKERY, OBEISANCE, WITCH KING e KILL.
Esse ano, os caras se uniram ao selo “Hell’s Headbangers Records” para o lançamento do seu aguardado quarto álbum de estúdio, intitulado “Endless Scourge of Torment”. O Play sai em meados de julho em Fitas Cassete, CDs e Vinil, e ganhou arte de capa sinistra caprichada, do “Nether Temple Design”.
O War Metal elaborado não é mera cópia das referências do estilo. O MANTICORE trabalha bem o seu som, apresenta variações rítmicas, não depende exclusivamente de blasts infinitos e elabora riffs sólidos e viciantes.
É fato que algumas das faixas são extremamente diretas, absurdamente ríspidas e brutais, como “Thy Seed Through the Fire”, a primeira após a intro, e “Empty Eyes, Hollow Temples”.
Outra faceta da banda é a composição e execução de sons mais ritualísticos, substituindo a velocidade exacerbada pelo foco numa ambientação maléfica e fria, como em “Breath of Plague”.
Essa variação entre os temas assassinos e urgentes, e as faixas mais cadenciadas, torna a experiência muito mais interessante.
Ao longo do disco, vai ficando claro que o batera é fera demais. O que o cara faz na sequência “Halo of Vermin” e “Defiled by Supremacy” é brincadeira. Me lembrou a habilidade, criatividade e rapidez do “Paulus Kressman”, ícone canadense do estilo.
Uma das minhas preferidas do álbum é a enigmática “In Dark We Are Enslaved”, que tem andamentos médios e até lentos, efeitos sonoros doentios ao fundo e riffs simples e diretos ao ponto, que funcionam bem demais.
A banda reservou uma surpresa interessante, que é o cover para “Captain Howdy”, do TWISTED SISTER. Nada convencional para uma banda do gênero, com certeza. O cover ganhou peso excruciante e pegada Doom/Death, permanecendo reconhecível apesar da metamorfose.
A trinca de encerramento conta com a feroz “Enveloped in Hatred”, que desfila alguns dos riffs mais destruidores do álbum; A visceral “Requiem for a Worm” com sua percussão única e insana, e a ótima, cadenciada e ritualística “Abrahamic Obliteration”.
Excelente quarto álbum de estúdio do MANTICORE, que mantém sua tradição de lançar material de qualidade, recusando-se a abandonar sua essência, seu estilo beligerante, herege e desafiador.
Lançamento que certamente agradará aos fãs de ARCHGOAT (FIN), REVENGE (CAN), BLACK WITCHERY (EUA), HOLOCAUSTO (BRA), BLASPHEMOPHAGHER (ITA), PROCLAMATION (ESP), RITES OF THY DEGRINGOLADE (CAN), TEITANBLOOD (ESP), DIOCLETIAN (NZL).

MANTICORE is a name with quite a few homonyms. Clearing it up, I’m talking about the trio hailing from Ohio, in the US, a band founded in 2000, known and highly respected in the underground, which creates and practices bestial Blackened Death Metal / War Metal.
Since its creation, the entity has recorded a considerable amount of material, from demos, EPs, three studio albums (last one in the distant 2012) to a ton of Splits, having recorded with names such as FUNERAL PYRE, MORBOSIDAD, NECROHOLOCAUST, GRAVE UPHEAVAL, RITUAL SLAUGHTER, BESTIAL MOCKERY, OBEISANCE, WITCH KING and KILL.
This year, they’ve teamed up with label “Hell’s Headbangers Records” for the release of their long-awaited fourth studio album, titled “Endless Scourge of Torment”. The record comes out in mid-July on Cassettes, CDs and Vinyl (later in 2022), packed with a sinister, outstanding cover art by “Nether Temple Design”.
Their brand of War Metal is not a mere copy of the style references. MANTICORE work their sound quite well, presenting rhythmic variations, never relying exclusively on infinite blast beats, and producing solid and addictive riffs.
It is a fact that some of the tracks are extremely straightforward, harsh and brutal, like “Thy Seed Through the Fire”, first after the intro, and “Empty Eyes, Hollow Temples”.
Another facet of the band is the composition and execution of more ritualistic songs, trading the maddening speed for a focus on evil and ice-cold atmosphere, as in “Breath of Plague”.
This variation between murderous and urgent themes, and the slower, menacing tracks, makes the whole experience much more interesting.
Throughout the record, it becomes clear that their drummer is a beast. His performance on the sequel “Halo of Vermin” and “Defiled by Supremacy” is unsettling. It reminded me of the skills, creativity and speed of “Paulus Kressman”, the Canadian legend.
One of my favorites from the album is the enigmatic “In Dark We Are Enslaved”, which has medium and even slow tempos, sickening sound effects in the background and simple, straight-to-the-point and highly effective riffage.
Then the band brings in an offbeat surprise, the cover of TWISTED SISTER’s “Captain Howdy”. Unconventional pick for a band of the genre, for sure. Yet, a cool treat. The cover gained excruciating weight and Doom/Death vibe, remaining recognizable despite the metamorphosis.
The closing trio features fierce “Enveloped in Hatred”, displaying some of the album’s most vicious riffs; The visceral “Requiem for a Worm” with its unique and maniacal percussion, and the great, sluggish, and ritualistic “Abrahamic Obliteration”.
Excellent fourth studio album by MANTICORE. They maintain their tradition of releasing quality material, refusing to forsake their essence: The belligerent, heretical and provocative style.
A release that is sure to please fans of ARCHGOAT (FIN), REVENGE (CAN), BLACK WITCHERY (USA), HOLOCAUST (BRA), BLASPHEMOPHAGHER (ITA), PROCLAMATION (SPA), RITES OF THY DEGRINGOLADE (CAN), TEITANBLOOD (SPA), DIOCLETIAN (NZL).
